SCRANTON, PA (September 30, 2019) -- Marywood's Angela Sanchez scored her second of two goals early in the fourth quarter, lifting host Marywood University past the King's College field hockey team in non-conference play from Pacers Field.
A physical game throughout, the local rivalry got off to a quick start as Sanchez scored just over four minutes into the game off a cross from the right flank from Lindsey Gladden. The Pacers nearly doubled their lead, but junior
Emma Lehman made her first career save in the ninth minute to keep the score where it was.
The Monarchs would get their offense going in the second quarter, as
Sara Whitesell fired a shot that was saved but
Danielle Runo was there to sweep in the rebound to knot the match at a goal apiece. The game would only be tied for 59 seconds, as the Pacers got a goal from Jenna Dickey to make the score 2-1 heading into halftime.
After the break, King's would control the play early thanks to some strong midfield play from
Emily Sims,
Lauren Rowski and
Hannah Robbins. King's had a nice flurry in the 40th minute as Rowski nearly scored, but a defensive save from Marisa Mongioi denied the Monarchs of a second goal.
The play would stay in the Marywood zone, and King's would tie the score for the second time in the game thanks to another strong play from Sims. The sophomore kept a clearing drive in the zone and backhanded a pass into
Jolee Treslar. Treslar drove the end line and her shot slid through the pads of Kerri Mountz, and as the ball trickled towards the end line Runo tapped into the cage to get her second of the contest.
The Monarchs once again appeared to have scored, but Mongioi made another defensive save in the 49th minute to once again thwart a scoring chance for KC. Minutes later, the Pacers would finally get the ball back down into the Monarch zone and Sanchez cashed in on a rebound of a Dickey shot to score the game winner.
King's had plenty of chances down the stretch, including three penalty corners in the final two minutes but couldn't find the equalizer. Marywood outshot the Monarchs 14-11 on the game, while King's had 13 of the games 25 penalty corners to edge MU in that category. Lehman finished with four saves in her first career game in net for King's.
The Monarchs will have a day off before traveling to Alvernia University for more non-conference play Wednesday evening.
