NEW HAVEN, CT (January 10, 2020) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team scored four goals in the first period to record the program's biggest win with a 4-1 victory at Albertus Magnus College on Friday evening from the Ralph Walker Skating Rink in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Monarchs (2-10-0) started the game with the best period in program history scoring four times in the first 20 minutes of action.
Liam Johnson put King's on the board 9:17 into the game with his third goal of the season off an assist from
Tyler O'Mara. The assist was O'Mara first of the year in his fourth game and seventh of his career. Two minutes later the Monarchs doubled their lead with some nice passing leading to the sixth goal of the year for
Tommy Cahill.
Michael DiSchiavi and
Alex Acosta recorded the assists with great passing to Cahill.
The Monarch top forward line made it 3-0 with a little over three minutes left as Cahill recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the year off another great feed by DiSchiavi.
Rob Sheehan made it 4-0 with 28 seconds left in the period with his second goal of the year.
Tommy Green had the assist on the goal for his first of the season and three of his career. King's scored in the first period for the third consecutive game while equaling their season high number of goals. KC dominated most of the period outshooting the Falcons (2-11-2) 17-8.
Two early penalties in the second period gave the Falcons plenty of opportunity to get back into the game as they dominated shots in the period 19-6. Albertus Magnus took five shots on each of their power play opportunities in the period. However,
Brandon Daigle was fantastic in goal for King's stopping all 19 shots including the 10 on the two penalty kills. Six of the Falcons eight penalties in the game were in the second and third period with KC holding a 4-0 lead as the Monarchs went 0-7 on the power play for the game. The Monarchs, who have done a much better job not committing penalties in 2020 were called for four with the Falcons having three power play opportunities. AMC was able to keep Daigle from recording the program's first shutout with a power play goal by Jon Olson a little over five minutes into the third period.
Cameron Anklewich led the Monarchs with six shots and won eight of 15 faceoff attempts. Acosta and O'Mara had four shots each while Sheehan, Green, and Cahill took three shots apiece. Cahill won a team-high 14 faceoffs on 21 attempts. As a team the Monarchs held a 37-33 advantage in the faceoff circle. Daigle finished the game with 37 saves as the Falcons had a 38-31 shot advantage.
The teams will close out the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a 4 pm puck drop back at Ralph Walker Skating Rink.
