PITTSTON, PA (January 17, 2020) ---
Tyler Sayger equaled he season high with 47 saves but the visiting Nazareth College men's ice hockey team defeated King's College 4-0 on Friday evening in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action from Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
The Monarchs played the Golden Flyers tough all game, but Nazareth was able to build a 2-0 lead in the first period on a pair of power play goals. The Flyers increased the lead to 3-0 with 10.4 seconds to go in the third period as Mateo Capriotti scored a short-handed goal for his third of the season. Owen Kuhn scored the only even strength goal of the game 6:52 into the final period to set the final score.
Nazareth held a 51-19 shot advantage in the game as King's played a man down for close to 14 minutes of the game having been called for seven minor penalties. Sayger played great in goal keeping the game close making 13 saves in the first, 16 in the second period, and 18 more in the third. The Monarchs also benefited from great defense blocking eight shots including a huge block by
Tyler O'Mara in the second period stopping a shot from James McDonald from going into a wide-open net. O'Mara made a few other great defensive plays in the game that stopped NC attacks that won't show up in the box score.
Tommy Cahill and
Cameron Anklewich led the Monarchs with four shots each while
Alex Acosta and
Rob Sheehan had two apiece. Cahill won a team-high 10 faceoffs on 20 attempts.
Kuhns led the Flyers with two goals and an assist on four shots while Brian Miller had two assists. Michael Tilford was excellent in goal making 19 saves to pick up the shutout.
King's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 1:30 pm puck drop against sixth-ranked Utica College. The Pioneers are coming off a huge 8-3 victory at conference-leading Wilkes this afternoon.
