Sixth-Ranked Utica Uses Big Third Period To Pull Away From Monarchs

PITTSTON, PA (January 18, 2020) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team hung tough with sixth-ranked Utica College for two periods on Saturday afternoon at Revolution Ice Centre before the visiting Pioneers exploded for eight third period goals to win 10-0.

The Monarchs played great defensively for the first 40 minutes of action allowing a goal in each period to Kasper Kjellkvist. Eric Daniel was strong in goal making 31 saves in net while facing 33 shots. However, the third period was a different story as Kjellkvist completed his hat trick just 23 seconds into the period before seven different Pioneers found the back of the net in the period.

Utica finished the game with a 51-16 shot advantage with Daniel making 41 saves. King's was three-for-five on the penalty kill allowing two power play goals in the third period with the game already decided.

Offensively, Tommy Cahill led the Monarchs with six shots while Rob Sheehan took two. Cahill won 11 of his 27 faceoffs while Nick Richards and Keaton Caplis blocked a team-high three shots each. As a team the Monarchs blocked 18 shots.

Donovan Ott finished with three assists for Utica while Regen Cavanagh, Daniel Fritz, and Jarrod Fitzpatrick recorded one goal and two assists each. Joseph Giacobbo made 16 saves to pick up the shutout in goal.

The Monarchs will return to the ice next Friday with a trip up to Elmira, New York to take on the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College at 7 pm from MAC Ice Arena.
