Monarch Wrestling Competes at MAC Championships Saturday

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (January 18, 2020) -- The King's College wrestling team traveled to Lamade Gymnasium at Lycoming College for the 2020 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships, finishing seventh as a team with 23 points. 

The Monarchs top performer on the day came at 165, as sophomore Kade Kravits continued his very strong 2019-20 season by placing... The Dallas, PA native started the day with a second-period pin of Wyatt Bingaman of Messiah College, as Kravits led 14-2 before the fall victory at 4:59 of the match which included three takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls.

In the quarterfinals, Kravits chalked up a strong 5-0 win over Paul Santomarco of Lycoming, earning a takedown in period one, and followed that with an escape and takedown in the second period for the margin of victory. Kravits would be bounced from title contention in the 165 semifinals, as Matt Pangle of Messiah topped the Monarch by major decision, 9-0.

In the consolation semifinals, Kravits battled Tanner Vogel of Alvernia University, earning a flawless 6-0 win over Vogel to advance to the 3rd-place match against Kevin Edwards of Messiah College. The sophomore for King's would finish the day with a bang, as Kravits earned a pin 3:43 into the bout to earn the victory. In the second period, Kravits and Edwards were scoreless, but Kravits kept Edwards down off the whistle and pulled him down from behind with a leg hook. WIth control, Kravits kept the pressure on and eventually got the shoulders down for the pin. 

In other action, senior Dakota Quick dropped his two matches at 133, falling to Jack Bauer of Wilkes at 5:09 of the match by pin before dropping a consolation round match to Sam Hanley 18-10. King's had two wrestlers at 141, as Robert Zelinski moved to the third round of the consolation round. Zelinski fell to the second-ranked wrestling in the nation in Troy Stanich from Stevens Institute of Technology in the opening round at 2:43 by pin, but rebounded with a 10-0 major decision win over Brooks Robinson of Messiah. 

Zelinski would wrestle Brock Drahus of Alvernia in the second round of the consolation bracket, clinching a win by technical fall with a 19-1 score at 5:54 of the match. Zelinski's run though would end against Ethan Landis of Lycoming, falling 10-2 by major decision. James Maloy was 0-2 on the day as well at 141, losing to Landis by pin at 1:55 before dropping a match to Dylan O'Connor by fall at 1:52. 

Colby Spencer was King's lone representative at 149, and the freshman had to take a medical forfeit in his second match of the day as he could not continue in the match against Joseph Schneider of Stevens. Issac Mensah earned a win in the consolation bracket of 174, as he earned five takedowns in a 15-4 major decision victory over Tyler Riley of Messiah. In the third round of consolation action, Mensah would get taken down early before falling by pin at 1:15 to Conner Boal of Lycoming. 

Freshman Will Grace also rebounded after an opening round defeat to pick up a nice win over Dawson Tallant of Wilkes University at 184, coming back from being down 6-0 to tie the match at 6-6 before earning a pin at 6:13 of the match. Freshman David White was 0-2 at 197 for the Monarchs, as was Issac Santiago at 285. 

King's will host its first home meet of the season on Wednesday, entertaining Oneonta State at 7 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
