Monarch Women Use Strong First Quarter to Defeat FDU-Florham

MADISON, NJ (January 18, 2020) -- The King's College women's basketball team used a 25-13 first quarter of play to hold off a second-half comeback by FDU-Florham to capture their fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory, 76-66, Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs (10-5, 4-0 MAC Freedom) were led by senior Rebecca Prociak with her eighth double-double of the season and sophomore Samantha Rajza with her first double-double of the season.

King's dominated the opening quarter, storming out to a 14-point lead, 24-10, with 36 seconds left in the quarter before FDU ended the quarter on a 3-1 run to pull within 12, 25-13. Prociak scored the first six points of the second quarter for the Monarchs before fellow-senior Mackenzie Yori hit a transition bucket off a find by Rajza to build their 16-point lead, 33-17, with 4:49 left in the half, as both teams split their baskets over the final minutes of the half to see King's with a 17-point (43-26) lead.

Despite losing the third quarter to the Devils, 18-11, the Monarchs maintained a 10-point lead after three quarters of play, 54-44. FDU opened the final quarter of play on a 7-2 run to shrink the King's lead to just five points, 56-51, with 8:22 to go before a three by Yori and a three-point play by Prociak saw the Monarchs regain a nine-point lead, 62-53, with 7:38 on the game clock. The Devils scored the next five points to pull within four, but King's answered with a 12-2 run over the next 2:38 of play as they led, 74-62, before putting Prociak on the line for the final Monarch points of the afternoon to seal the win, 76-66.

Prociak had anther great performance, totaling a season-high 31 points, 12 rebounds, and a career-high eight blocks. Rajza and senior Mackenzie Yori continued their strong play, both adding 18 points, with Rajza adding 11 boards, six assists, and five steals while Yori added five rebounds.

FDU (2-13, 0-4 MAC Freedom) was led by four in double figures, including Jayda Bing (15), Cayla Staggers (14), Aleah Bass (14), and Jennah Roman (10). Bing and Bass also totaled a team-high eight rebounds, and Roman dished out six assists.

The Monarchs shot 44.4 percent (28-63) for the game, including 33.3 percent (4-12) from three, while dishing out 15 assists on their 28-made field goals. They used a strong shooting second quarter (58.33 percent) to help send them into the half time locker room with the 43-26 lead. King's out-rebounded FDU, 42-34, while forcing 17 Devils turnovers and picking up 10 steals. Inside the box score, the Monarchs held the advantage in points-off turnovers (15-12), points in the paint (48-38), and fast-break points (17-8).

King's is back in action in their local MAC Freedom rivalry game as they head down the street to Wilkes University for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday. They will then return home on Saturday as they host Delaware Valley University at 1:00 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
