WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 22, 2020) -- Five Monarchs recorded double digits Wednesday night as the King's College women's basketball team recorded their fifth straight win over Wilkes University, 75-53, in the Marts Center. King's improves to 11-5 overall and remains undefeated in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play as they are now 5-0.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth effort where neither team led by more than three points, and the game saw the score tied at 11 with 2:51 left in the fist before the Monarchs closed the quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 20-12 lead. King's would build a 10-point lead at three different points in the second quarter with the last time coming off a layup by sophomore
Emily Kriston with 3:20 to go, but Wilkes chipped away and ended the half on a 5-2 run to pull within seven, 33-26, heading into the break.
Wilkes came out with momentum in the third quarter, starting with an 8-3 run to inch within two, 36-34. King's answered with a 17-8 run of their own to rebuild a double-digit lead, 51-40, with 1:32 to go in the quarter. The Colonels scored four more points compared to the Monarchs two as King's led by nine, 53-44, with one quarter left. The Monarchs used a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring the Colonels 22-9 in the final quarter to secure the win in the cross-town rivalry.
Sophomore
Samantha Rajza led all scorers with 18 points, adding three assists, three steals, and three rebounds. Senior
Rebecca Prociak recorded her ninth double-double of the season, including her third straight, with 15 points and 10 boards, adding three blocks. Rounding out the Monarch offense was freshman
Emily Morano off the bench with 14 and seven rebounds and three steals, senior
Mackenzie Yori with 13 points, and Kriston with 10 points with seven boards and a team-high four assists.
Macy Berryman led Wilkes (6-10, 0-5 MAC Freedom) with 16 points, while Maddie Kelley led with nine rebounds with eight points. Katelyn Kinczel rounded out the scoring with eight points, and Brianna Horton had a game-high five assists.
The Monarchs shot the ball well tonight, connecting on 40.9 percent (27-66) from the field, including 47.4 percent (9-19) from three. They totaled 36 rebounds, and dished out 14 assists on 27 field goals, and recorded 13 steals off 26 Colonels turnovers.
King's will return to play on Saturday as they are set to host the Delaware Valley University Aggies with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
