Men's Volleyball Continues Strong Start with 3-0 Win Over Immaculata

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 29, 2020) -- The King's College men's volleyball team cruised to their fifth straight win to start the 2020 season with a 3-0 victory over the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University.

King's opened the match on a 7-1 run behind two kills each for sophomore Matt Piontkowski and freshman George Beck. Immaculata pulled within three, 8-5, before the Monarchs cruised with a 12-1 run to secure the first set, 25-9. King's carried the momentum into the second set as they opened on an 11-3 run before trading points as the Monarchs led, 17-11. Over the final stretch, sophomore Joe Jones Jr. totaled four aces, including three straight, to lead an 8-0 run to claim set two, 25-11.

Immaculata rallied to compete in the final set after trailing 10-4. The Mighty Macs used a 5-2 run to pull within two, 12-10, but the Monarchs responded with a 4-1 run to take the lead, 16-11. Immaculata would not let this set get away from them as they closed the deficit within two again, 16-14. King's used a 5-2 run behind two kills from freshman Joe Joe Herman to build a lead that would hold as the teams traded points to end the match with the Monarchs taking set three, 25-21.

King's (5-0) was led by Herman with 10 kills on 19 attempts with just one error, hitting .474 for the match with a team-high six digs. Freshman Sam Capwell continued his strong play with eight kills on 12 attempts with no errors, hitting .667 with two service aces, and Piontkowski added seven kills on 17 attempts, hitting .294. For the defense, Beck and Jones Jr. added five digs each, with Beck dishing out 26 assists and Jones recording nine aces. At the net, junior Danny Harpersberger led the team with two blocks.

Garrett Pepper and John Bohrer led Immaculata (0-1) with seven kills each, while Pepper led the defense with six digs. Pepper and Donte Ramos dished out nine assists each in the loss.

As a team, the Monarchs hit an impressive .406 for the match compared to the Mighty Macs' .041. They also held the advantage in kills (36-23), aces (11-2), and assists (34-22), while totaling 22 team digs.

King's will take the weekend off and get ready for the start of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) schedule as they travel to Eastern University on Wednesday, February 5 with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
