Brockport Edges Monarchs Men’s Hockey In Overtime

BROCKPORT, NY (January 4, 2020) --- Doc Gentzler knocked in a rebound 18 seconds into overtime to give the host Brockport Golden Eagles a 5-4 victory over the King's College men's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon from Tuttle North Ice Arena in a non-conference affair.

The Monarchs (1-9-0) nearly pulled the upset over The College at Brockport (7-6-0) on their home ice going up 3-1 nearly halfway through the second period. The hosts fought their way back to tie the game on a pair of goals by Mitchell Parsons. Jeremy Solat gave the Eagles their first lead of the game with a power play goal 9:38 into the third period. King's struck right back two minutes later as Michael DiSchiavi rocketed a shot from the point with King's playing a man-up.

A pair of freshmen recorded their first career points to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 5:04 into the game on KC's first shot as Rob Sheehan knocked the puck inside the left post off assists by Rhett Padgett and Josh Edwards. The Eagles took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Monarchs as Solat knocked in a loose puck for his first goal of the game at 13:49 of the first. Six minutes later Solat headed to the penalty box with the first penalty of the game. The Monarchs made the mistake hurt as Tommy Cahill scored his fourth goal of the game six seconds into the power play opportunity off the first assist of the career by Keaton Caplis. Edwards then increased the lead to 3-1 9:28 into the second period off assists by Alex Acosta and Cahill.

The Monarchs were a perfect 2-for-2 on their power play opportunities in the game and were 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. Brockport's power play goal came just seven seconds from King's having a successful penalty kill. The Golden Eagles held a 59-18 shot advantage in the game as freshman Eric Daniel made 54 saves in his first collegiate appearance in net. Daniel made 20 saves in the first period, 16 in the second, and 18 in the third period.

Cahill and Edwards recorded three points on a goal and two assists each. Cahill recorded his 10th career point in just his 10th game and now has 11 points on four goals and seven assists for the season. Tyler O'Mara won 12 of 24 faceoff attempts while Cameron Anklewich won 12 of his 19 attempts. The 11 points on four goals and seven assists equals the Monarchs' season high and is the tied for the second-highest point total in program history with their 6-4 loss to Manhattanville to end the first semester.

King's will now return home for their first home game of 2020 on Tuesday afternoon when they host Morrisville State College at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 pm.
