Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Special Teams Leads No. 14 Stevenson Past King's Friday

PITTSTON, PA (January 31, 2020) -- Visiting Stevenson University, ranked No. 14 in the latest United States College Hockey Organization (USCHO) Top 15 poll, scored on three of its 10 power-play chances while killing both of the King's College men's ice hockey's chances with the extra man to earn a 6-2 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) win.

The Monarchs (2-15-1, 1-10-1 UCHC, 1-3-1 MAC), who were playing their second to last home game of the 2019-20 season, wasted no time taking an early lead thanks to a great effort from its top line. Sophomore Michael DiSchiavi fore-checked hard in the left corner to win the puck back, centering the puck to Liam Johnson in front. Johnson fed the pick across to sophomore Alex Acosta, who backhanded the puck into the right side of the net for the 1-0 lead at 1:09 of the contest.

The goal was Acosta's fourth of the season, which is tied for second on the team while tallying in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. The Mustangs (13-4-1, 10-1-0 UCHC, 3-1 MAC) would tie the game with their first power play tally of the game, as Carl Lyden struck at 12:08 for his 11th of the year.

Stevenson took the lead just 17 seconds later, as Luke Benitez struck in front off a nice feed from Colin Woods to make the 2-1, which is where the game would stand at the end of the first period. After the break, Stevenson chalked up two more goals to take a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes with the eventual game-winner coming from Christian Ripley on the power play 2:43 into the period.

The Mustangs would build their lead up to 6-1 at 9:47 of the third period, but King's scored one of the flukiest goals of the season with just under two minutes to go to make the score 6-2. The marker was credited to defenseman Connor Lavin, his first collegiate goal, as the puck he fired in from the red line deflected off of SU goalkeeper Dustin Moyer's stick and into the net for the tally.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Daigle was solid all night for the Monarchs, as the netminder made 50 stops in net including 21 in the third period. Johnson finished with two assists, also helping out on Lavin's goal in addition to the first score of the game for King's. DiSchiavi led all players in shots for KC Friday with three, while Acosta finished with two shots on goal as well.

Austin Master finished with two goals and an assist for the Mustangs, while Lyden finished with a goal and an assist. Dominic Brenza and Ryan Patrick each added a pair of assists for Stevenson in the victory.

The Monarchs finish home action in Revolution Ice Centre this season Saturday afternoon, hosting UCHC foe Chatham University at 3:30 p.m. in Pittston, PA as the first game of a men's-women's doubleheader with the King's women's ice hockey team.
