PITTSTON, PA (February 1, 2020) ---
Tyler Sayger had a monster game in goal recording a season high 55 saves but penalties once again hurt the King's College men's ice team in a 3-2 loss to Chatham University on Saturday afternoon in the team's final home game of the season.
The Cougars (3-16-0 (2-10-0 UCHC) struck just 31 seconds into the game as Eric Hildebrand scored his fourth goal of the season. The Monarchs showed a little bit of tiredness from Friday's night battle against Stevenson as Chatham outshot the Monarchs 22-6 in the period. However, the Monarchs (2-16-1 (1-11-1 UCHC) battled back and were able to kill off two power play opportunities for CU in the final 10 minutes.
King's came out of the first intermission strong with
Nick Richards tallying his first collegiate goal on a backhanded shot 1:21 into the second period to even the score. Richards picked up a rebound off a shot from the right wing from
Matt Amelio and slid it into the open net.
Isaac Cirinna also picked up an assist on the play after passing the puck to Amelio down the right side. Chatham retook the lead in the eighth minute as Matt Mood found the back of the net for the fifth time this year just eight seconds away from KC killing off their first penalty of the period.
The Cougars would extend their lead to 3-1 11:49 into the final period as Michael Lamison scored his second of the year seven seconds after King's finished killing off the second of two penalties in a three-minute span.
Tyler O'Mara would cut into the lead less than a minute later as King's capitalized on a Chatham penalty scoring his second goal of the year just nine seconds into the power play.
Keaton Caplis and
Michael DiSchiavi set the junior up for his ninth career goal. The Monarchs had an opportunity to even the score in the final minutes when CU was called for another penalty with 1:44 left. The Monarchs pulled Sayger for an extra attacker for the final 45 seconds but two shot on goal were stopped by Karl Zodda.
The Cougars held a 58-19 shot advantage in the game and were 1-for-7 on the power play. King's went 1-for-4 on their power plays while DiSchiavi led the squad with four shots. Cirinna won a team high 13 faceoffs on 25 attempts. Sayger made 21 saves in the first period, 20 in the second period, and 14 more in the third.
The Monarchs, who will now play their final six games on the road, will start that road string on Thursday night against cross-town rivals Wilkes University at 7:30 pm. The Colonels, who clinched the MAC title on Saturday, are currently also atop the UCHC standings.
