No. 14 Colonels Use Big Second Period To Defeat King’s Thursday

WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 6, 2020) --- The fourteenth-ranked Wilkes University men's ice hockey team scored four goals in the second period to skate past King's College by a score of 9-3 in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest on Thursday evening from the Toyota Sportsplex at Coal Street Park in Wilkes-Barre.

The Colonels (16-5-0, 12-2-0 UCHC, 6-0-0 MAC) scored the first goal of the game 8:11 into the first period as Danny Reidel lit the lamp. Two minutes later, the Monarchs (2-17-1, 1-12-1 UCHC, 1-4-1 MAC) responded with a power play goal by Liam Johnson to even the score at one. The goal was Johnson's fourth of the season while Alex Bastone and Rob Sheehan had assists on the play. The assists were each of their first on the year. The game remained tied at one through the first intermission with Wilkes outshooting the Monarchs 15-7 over the first 20 minutes.

Wilkes came out of the locker room strong in the second period scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the period to take a 3-1 lead. The Colonels increased the lead to 4-1 on a goal by Nick Fea at the 12:39 mark. King's would cut the lead down to 4-2 with 4:05 to go in the period as Alex Acosta knocked in his fifth career goal off assists from Rob Sheehan and Michael DiSchiavi. The assist was Sheehan second of the game while DiSchiavi recorded his ninth of the year and 13th of his career.

The Colonels responded with a goal from Phil Erickson a minute later to go into the second intermission with a 5-2 advantage. WU would then add three more goals in the first six minutes of the third period to increase their lead to six goals. Tyler O'Mara would stop the string of goals by the Colonels with a power play goal with 6:26 to go in the game off assists from Josh Edwards and Isaac Cirinna. The goal was O'Mara's third of the year and 10th of his career. Edwards recorded his sixth assist of the year while the assist for Cirinna was his fourth of the year and 12th of his career. The Colonels scored a power play goal of their own a minute later to set the final score.

King's played hard for all 60 minutes but were unable to shut down the Colonels' sixth-ranked offense that entered the game averaging 4.55 goals per game. Brandon Daigle made a career high 57 saves as the Colonels finished the game with a 65-18 shot advantage. The Monarchs were .500 on power play opportunities in the game scoring two goals while Wilkes scored three power play goals on five opportunities.

Fea had two goals and an assist while Tyson Araujo scored twice to lead the Colonels. Donald Flynn recorded three assists while Michael Gurska added four assists.

King's will be back in action on Saturday with their final non-conference game of the year at Bryn Athyn College. Puck drop will be at 7 pm from the Junge Ice Hockey Rink in Bryn Athyn.
