RIVERDALE, NY (February 20, 2020) -- Sophomore
Matt Piontkowski recorded a perfect eight kills on eight attempts to hit 1.000 for the match as the King's College Monarchs cruised to a 3-0 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) Thursday night in the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center.
The Monarchs opened the match on a 13-2 run as five different Monarchs recorded points in the stretch before cruising to a 25-6 win in the first set. The second set began in a back-and-forth effort that saw the match tied at 3 before King's scored six straight points behind two aces by freshman
George Beck to take a 9-3 lead. The Monarchs pulled ahead to lead 21-8, but the Dolphins traded points with King's over the final stretch, as King's took set two, 25-13. In the final set of the match, CMSVÂ stayed in the set early as King's led, 8-6, but the Monarchs used an 11-4 run to pull ahead and secure the final set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0, over the host Dolphins.
Kings (10-4, 0-2 MAC Freedom) was led by freshman Joe
Joe Herman with 13 kills on 21 attempts, hitting .571, with five digs and a block. Freshman
Sam Capwell and junior
Danny Harpersberger rounded out the Monarchs offensive efforts with four kills, as Capwell hit .500 and Harpersberger hit .667. For the defense, senior libero
Kyle Duggan led with five digs, while Piontkowski, sophomore
Joe Jones Jr., and freshman
Aziz Atiyeh added three each.
At the net, Harpersberger and Beck led with three blocks each, and Capwell added two blocks. Beck also dished out 26 assists, and the Monarchs continued their hot serving as Jones Jr. totaled four aces and Beck and Atiyeh added three a piece.
CMSV (0-11, 0-0 Skyline) was led by Felix Paulino with seven kills on 16 attempts, hitting .375, with four digs. Miguel Losa dished out 18 assists, while Christian Santiago added three digs.
As a team, the Monarchs recorded 33 terminations on 52 attempts, hitting .538 for the match compared to the Dolphins' .113. King's held the advantage in every statistical category, including kills (30-20), aces (12-1), blocks (5-1), assists (28-18), and digs (22-10).
The Monarchs are back in action this weekend as they host New Jersey City University and Neumann University in a home tri-match in McGrane Gymnasium starting at 12:00 p.m.
