WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 22, 2020) -- Visiting Drew University surged out to a quick lead in the first half, and rolled to a victory over the King's College women's lacrosse team in the 2020 home opener 18-2 from McCarthy Stadium.
After the visiting Rangers took a 12-0 lead into the intermission, freshman
Jess Bahnick ended the goal drought with her second goal of the season on a free position shot. The Monarchs tallied just under seven minutes later as junior
Mary Kate Klodarska notched her third of the season, but that was all that King's would get as the Rangers held on for the win.
The Monarchs had a lot of great chances in the first half, but sophomore
Jen O'Connor's first chance of the game at 26:51 hit the post. Minutes later, Klodarska also hit the post, and attempts by freshman
Celia Medina in front and senior
Kelly Pierce in transition were stopped by Kat Michalski.
Overall, King's was led by Pierce and her two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers, while O'Connor finished with four draw wins and one ground ball. Klodarska led the team with four shots, two coming on goal, adding two ground balls.
Drew was led by five goals from Allie DiDario, while Lauren Cassella had four goals and four assists. Drew led the shot count 33-12, while also picking up a 24-15 edge in ground balls. Drew also paced the game with 15 draw controls to the seven for King's.
The Monarchs (1-1) will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday, taking on Marywood University at 5 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium in non-conference action.
