Monarch Women Sit 10th After First Day At MAC Championships

READING, PA (February 28, 2020) --- The King's College women's indoor track and field team opened up the 2020 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships with a school record in the 4x200 meter relay and the 60 meter hurdles on Friday from Alvernia University in Reading.

The Monarchs scored four points to sit 10th place with 11 teams recording at least one point. Misericordia University leads with 51 points while Eastern University is second with 44 points. Messiah College is in third place with 28 points.
 
60 Meters
Angelina Broga ran a career best time of 8.44 seconds to finish seventh in the second of three preliminary heats and 20th overall. The freshman was in the same heat as four of Saturday's eight qualifying times with Messiah junior Kathryn Wiederrecht winning the heat in 8.01 seconds. She had the second fastest time of the day behind Stevens freshman Laura Mathews who ran 7.91 seconds in the third heat. Eastern junior Courtney Moyer won the first heat in 8.06 seconds.
 
60 Meter Hurdles
Emily Harrington qualified for Saturday's final with a school record time of 9.45 seconds while finishing second in the fourth and final preliminary heat. The junior bested her previous record time of 9.48 seconds while running the fifth fastest time in the field of 25. Kristine Krumpfer was fourth in the heat and 16th overall with a best time of 10.35 seconds. Stevens freshman Laura Mathews won the heat with the best time of the afternoon at 9.00 seconds. Messiah junior Kathryn Wiederrecht won the second heat in 9.32 seconds while her senior teammate Taylor Wiederrecht won the first heat in 9.32 seconds. Eastern senior Nicole Weenink finished second in the second heat with the fourth fastest time at 9.45 seconds while Stevenson junior Rachel Panek won the third heat in 9.48 seconds.
 
4x200 Meter Relay
The Monarch women won the second of three heats and finished fifth out of 11 teams with a school record time of 1:51.00. Sarah Ross, Kailey Orzechowski, Angelina Broga, and Emily Harrington beat the previous record of 1:52.85 at the season-opening Rust Buster to score four points. The Messiah squad of Kathryn Wiederrecht, Ellie Longshaw, Julia Geisheimer, and Ellissa Slader won the gold with a time of 1:46.81 while Eastern's Nicole Weenink, Rayven Rouse, Inicia Ferguson, and Cecilia Jones was second in 1:47.02. Widener's team of Alejanadra Borbolla Diaz, Carly Lownes, Abigail Sheerer, and Angelica Howell finished third in 1:48.12.

Long Jump
Sarah Ross and Sarah Zultevicz had great days in a tough field to finish 11th and 13th respectively. Ross was 11th with a mark of 4.99 meters (16'4.5") on her second attempt. The junior started with a jump of 4.80 meters and then finished with a mark of 4.98 meters on her three attempts. Zultevicz jumped a season best 4.97 meters (16'3.75") on her second attempt of three. The junior fouled on her first jump and then hit 4.60 meters on her final attempt. Eastern senior Nicole Weenink won the gold medal with a jump of 5.80 meters (19'0.5") on her sixth and final jump. Messiah senior Taylor Wiederrecht earned the silver medal with a mark of 5.37 meters (17'7.5") on her fifth attempt. Misericordia senior Lindsey Graver was third with a jump of 5.31 meters (17'5.25") on her fifth attempt.

The MAC Championships will wrap up on Saturday starting at 11 am in Reading.
