GRANTHAM, PA (February 29, 2020) -- Sophomore
Kade Kravits saw his amazing breakout season come to an end Saturday afternoon, as the 165 standout from King's College was defeated by Matt Pangle of Messiah College 3-2 in the consolation third round of the 2020 NCAA Southeast Regional, hosted by Messiah at Hitchcock Arena. He then came back in the 7th place match to earn a major decision to finish on the podium.
The match-up was the second of the season for Kravits and Pangle, as the two met back at the 2020 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships, with Pangle earning a 9-0 major decision victory. That wasn't the case on Saturday though, as the two went toe-to-toe for the entire seven minutes. In the opening period, neither wrestler threw any move or took any shots as both Pangle and Kravits worked on the head positioning while feeling each other out. The first points of the match came in the second period, as Kravits escaped after 30 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Pangle earned a takedown late in the second period, and grew his riding time advantage to 59 seconds going to the third.
Pangle chose behind to start the third period, and kept Kravits down until around 20 seconds remaining in the period, securing the riding time point. With the match deadlocked at two points apiece, Kravits tried to make a few last ditch efforts at grabbing a leg or using an arm hook to get Pangle down, but couldn't as the time ran out.
In the seventh place match, Kravits came out on fire with a takedown of Morgan Peterson of Southern Virginia University, earning back points as well to take a 6-0 lead after the first period. Kravits would use an escape and also pick up a riding time point to pick up the major decision win, placing him seventh for the weekend. The 34 wins on the year are the most individual wins for a Monarch wrestler since 2004.
Kravits and his teammates will return in 2020-21 looking for continued progress for a team that is not that far removed from finishing in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships.
