Monarchs Drop Heartbreaking Overtime Decision Against Delaware Valley

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 15, 2021) – The King's College field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in overtime to visiting Delaware Valley University on Friday evening at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (3-8, 0-4 MAC Freedom) outshot the Aggies (2-12, 1-3 MAC Freedom) 24-11 in the game. King's put on the pressure early as Danielle Runo nearly scored 1:13 into the first quarter but had her shot stopped by Alyssa Rudd. In the seventh minute Runo had two more great looks in front of cage but once again Rudd managed to kick away back-to-back shots. Delaware Valley had their first attempt at goal in the 10th minute when Ellie Glatz made a big save on a shot by Maiya Wendel.

King's scored the first goal of the game early in the 13th minute when Jessie Smalley knocked in a rebound from Sara Whitesell for her third goal of the season. The assist was the second of the year for Whitesell. The Monarchs kept the pressure on Rudd early into the second quarter as Runo, Whitesell, and Bailey Jordan had shots saved by the Aggie keeper in the first two minutes of action. Delaware Valley got on the board in the 24th minute as Gillian Nardelli knocked in her fifth goal of the year off an assist by Lili Dougherty following a penalty corner.

The Monarchs struck right back as Runo collected a loose ball and rocketed a shot into the back of the cage not even 30 seconds after the Aggies scored to give KC a 2-1 lead. The Monarchs fought hard to increase the lead before the half ended by Rudd stopped attempts by Runo, Smalley, and Jordan in the final five minutes of the quarter. King's outshot the Aggies 13-1 in the second quarter but Rudd was able to make eight saves and keep the DVU deficit at one heading into the break.

Sydney Keagle evened the game up at two early in the 40th minute as she scored her second of the season off a feed by Wendel. The Aggies took the only four shots of a very defensive third quarter with Glatz making back-to-back saves on a dangerous attack late in the quarter before a third shot went wide. The Monarchs came out in the fourth quarter strong earning a penalty corner a minute in. King's was unable to get off a shot off the corner but a minute later Emma Clark gave the Monarchs the lead with her first career goal off an assist by Abby Wolfe.

Clark nearly gave the Monarchs a two-goal lead in the 53rd minute but had her attempt stopped by Rudd. Delaware Valley evened the score with 4:06 left in the game taking advantage of a penalty corner. Nardelli scored her second goal of the game off an assist by Ashley Birmingham to send the game into overtime.

King's held possession to begin the extra session and had an opportunity to score 1:49 into the period as Wolfe missed wide of the cage. The Monarch earned a penalty corner in the 65th minute which the Aggies successfully defended and sent the ball up the field. The ball found its way to Wendel who took the ball, dribbled just inside the circle, and released a shot into the back of the cage for the game-winner.

The Monarchs held a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. Glatz made four saves in cage for King's while Rudd made 13 saves for the Aggies.

King's will look to rebound from the tough loss on Sunday when they host Marywood University on Senior Day in their final non-conference contest of the year. Prior to the 1:00 pm start the Monarchs will honor their senior class.
