Brockport Rallies Late To Defeat King’s Men’s Ice Hockey In Season Opener

PITTSTON, PA (October 29, 2021) -- The King's College men's ice hockey team fell to visiting SUNY Brockport 3-2 on Friday evening at Revolution Ice Centre in the season opener for both teams.

The Monarchs built a 2-0 lead midway through the third period before the Golden Eagles rallied for three goals in the final eight minutes to earn the victory. King's gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about all night with exciting plays and great defense.

King's jumped on top just over five minutes into the game as Brett Dillon lit the lamp 57 seconds into the first power-play opportunity of the season. Zach Satalino started with the puck near the blue line and passed it to Tyler Blanchard on the left wing. Blanchard sent a cross ice pass to Dillon who buried a shot into the back of the net giving King's the lead. The Monarchs received excellent goaltending from Tyler Sayger to keep the Golden Eagles off the board in the first and second periods. Sayger stopped 29 shots through the first two periods and helped the Monarchs kill off eight penalty kills including a pair of penalty kills where Brockport had a two-man advantage.

Blanchard gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead 9:07 into the third period on a breakaway goal. Jackson Grozelle blocked a shot at the other end by Anthony Hora. Dillon pushed the loose puck up the ice to Blanchard who outraced a Brockport defender and beat the goalie for his first goal of the year.

Brockport cut into the Monarch lead a few minutes later during a power-play opportunity as Jacob King fired a shot into the back of the net with 7:45 left. The Golden Eagles evened the score with 3:38 remaining on another power-play as Mitchell Parsons lit the lamp on a laser from near the blue line. A little over a minute later Trevor Pray scored the game-winning goal knocking in a rebound from a shot by Ryan Romeo. The Monarchs pressed to even the game back up and had a couple of chances in the final seconds but shots by Kent Lee and Aaron Frenkel were saved.

Dillon and Blanchard finished the game with one goal and one assist each while Satalino had an assist. Jack Cooper led the team with seven shots while Dillon had four. The Monarchs won 42 of 87 faceoffs with Andrew Dreher winning a team-high seven on 16 attempts. Casey Gerstein led the team in blocked shots with four while Sayger finished with 35 saves. The Monarchs were 1-for-7 on the power-play and 9-for-11 on the penalty kill.

King's will now turn their attention to next weekend and the first conference games of the year. The Monarchs will travel down the turnpike on Friday to take on Neumann University at 7 p.m. in Aston before heading to New York on Saturday afternoon to take on Manhattanville College.
