ASTON, PA (November 5, 2021) – The King's College men's ice hockey team scored a program-record six goals, including four in the third period, to defeat host Neumann University 6-3 on Friday evening in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opener for both teams at IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston.
The win also gives head coach Tom Seravalli his first career coaching victory. The six goals are the most the Monarchs have scored in a single game elapsing the previous number of five that they scored against Chatham in 2018. The three power-play goals equal the program record that they scored in the same game against Chatham.
"We had a great first shift to set the tone," Coach Seravalli had to say about the win. "We almost started the game with a lead in the first minute. Obviously, some mental errors and mistakes happened in the first that we'd like to have back, but that's going to happen considering how young we are. Yet, what I loved most was our competitiveness and resilience. Our guys could have given up, but they banded together and found a way to come back. It was a true team win!"
The Monarchs won the opening faceoff and 30 seconds into the game
Kent Lee ripped a shot that was saved by Zach Richards in goal for the Knights. Neumann got on the board two minutes later as Luke Croucher scored his second goal of the season. Tyler Kulas gave the hosts a two-goal advantage at the 10:43 mark with a power-play goal.
King's came roaring out of the first intermission and capitalized on their first power play opportunity of the second period with Lee scoring his first career goal just over five minutes into the period. Not even 90 seconds later, Lee tied things up with his second goal off an assist by
Aaron Frenkel. Neumann responded with a goal by Cameron Hatziioannou with 8:31 left in the period to take a 3-2 lead. The Knights took the one-goal lead into the second intermission.
Jack O'Neil tied things up 1:19 into the third period with his second career goal and first of the season.
Michael DiSchiavi tallied his 15th career assist on the play. The scored remained tied until the 14:43 mark of the period when DiSchiavi scored what proved to be the game-winner with his fifth career goal and first of the season.
Jack Cooper and Lee were given assists on the power-play goal. A few minutes later the Monarchs capitalized on another power-play opportunity as
Brett Dillon scored his second goal of the season and fourth of his career off an assist by
Josh Edwards. The assist was the first of the year for Edwards and eighth of his career.
Alexander Ray put the nail in the coffin in the final minute with an empty net goal.
The four goals in a period are the most for the Monarchs since January 10, 2020 when they scored four times in a 4-1 victory at Albertus Magnus. Their win over Neumann was also the second for the program and their second win at IceWorks Skating Complex in four trips.
Lee finished with two goals and one assist while taking a team-high three shots. DiSchiavi tallied a goal and an assist while also taking three shots.
Tyler Sayger earned his second career win in net making 31 saves including stopping the final 11 shots he faced. The Monarchs were three-for-five on the power-play while going one-for-six on the penalty kill.
Casey Gerstein won a team-best 10 faceoffs on 17 attempts while
Rob Sheehan went 5-2 on his seven faceoffs.
King's will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow afternoon when they take on Manhattanville in Rye, New York at the Playland Ice Casino. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 pm. The Valiants were defeated by Wilkes University 9-3 on Friday evening.
