Women’s Ice Hockey Drops Series Opener At Utica

UTICA, NY (November 12, 2021) -- The King's College women's ice hockey team was dealt a 13-0 defeat by Utica College on Friday afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) matchup at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, NY.

The hosts struck first 2:29 into the game when Nicole Flak snuck a shot from the right side just inside the upper right corner of the net. Hailey Modlin was credited with the assist on the goal. The Monarch defense tightened up after the goal and frustrated the Pioneers for most of the period until Georgiana Santullo scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with 2:57 left. Utica took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission when Courtney Staniszewski deflected a shot from Madison Novotny into the goal with 24 seconds left.

The Monarchs came out and kept the puck inside their blue line for the first minute of the period with Emma Clark putting a shot on goal that was saved by Savannah Gutierrez. The Pioneers responded with a strong offensive attack of their own taking six shots over the next two minutes of play. Syn Dahl stopped three of the shots while Savannah Willard blocked two shots and Perri Cronk blocked one. Hannah Keating gave the hosts a 4-0 lead at the 3:19 mark off assists by Flak and Modlin. Utica increased the lead to 6-0 with two goals in a span of 10 seconds just prior to the five-minute mark. First, Erica Sloan found Carly Stefanini at the left post for a tap-in goal. Santullo then scored her second goal of the game after winning the faceoff.

King's just missed getting on the scoreboard as Cronk had her shot from the left side saved by Gutierrez but the puck managed to sneak behind the goalie and slide toward the goal. A Utica defender was able to glide in and hit the puck away before it crossed the line for a goal. Utica scored at 8:53 of the period when Sloan knocked in a cross-ice pass from Stefanini. A little over a minute later Carolyn Whitney knocked in a rebound after Dahl saved a shot by Callie McLaughlin. The hosts made it 9-0 at 15:41 of the period as Rebecca Brown scored her third goal of the season off assists by Abby Lillis and Maya Bennett. The Pioneers wrapped up the scoring in the period with 45 seconds left as Modlin knocked in a rebound off a saved shot by Ava Suda.

Suda gave the Pios an 11-0 advantage 54 seconds into the third period with her first goal of the year. Santullo scored her third goal of the game at 5:35 off assists by Stefanini and McLaughlin. Alexa Carlon found the back of the net as she collected a wide shot from Whitney to round out the scoring.

The Monarchs were outshot by the Pioneers 59-5. Becca Allen, Josée Aitken, Cronk, Jordan Dittmar, and Clark recorded shots for King's. Dittmar had a team-best six faceoff wins on 16 attempts. Dahl made 25 saves in goal before being replaced by Hannah Bowers in the second period. Bowers made 21 saves 24:19 minutes of action.

King's and Utica will conclude their season series tomorrow afternoon with first puck drop at 2 pm.
