PITTSTON, PA (November 13, 2021) -- It wasn't pretty but at the end of the day a win is a win. The King's College men's ice hockey team earned the program's first-ever victory on home ice at Revolution Ice Centre on Saturday defeating Albertus Magnus College 3-2 in overtime behind a goal and assist each by
Jack Cooper and
Tyler Blanchard.
The Monarchs (2-3-0) showed some effects of tired legs on the ice after giving nationally ranked Wilkes a battle on Friday evening. The Falcons (0-3-0) had fresh legs after not playing in two weeks. King's struck first as
Mahingan Decontie recorded his first career point with a goal at 6:47 of the first period. AMC responded with a goal of their own at 16:36. Jonathan Stein won a faceoff inside the blue line and snuck a shot just inside the right post to even the game up.
The Falcons took their first lead of the game 11:43 into the second period on an unassisted goal by Fabian Hast. The lead was short-lived though as Cooper sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to Blanchard streaking down the ice. Blanchard received the puck and one-timed it into the back of the net for his third goal of the year at 16:58.
Neither team was able to score in the third period with the Monarchs having the majority of the chances in the period. The game went into the extra 3v3 overtime period tied at two. In the extra session the Falcons were called for a penalty 59 seconds in giving the Monarchs an extra skater on the ice. King's used the extra skater to work the puck around the Falcon defenders before Blandchard found Cooper in front of the net. Cooper's first attempt was stopped by the goalie, but he grabbed the rebound and sent the puck into the back of the net for the game-winner at 1:46. The goal was his team-leading fifth of the year.
Michael DiSchiavi was also credited with an assist on the play after passing the puck to Blanchard.
The win gives the Monarchs a weekend split for the second straight week and gives them their first overtime win of the year in their second game that needed extra time. After many close calls including a tie two years ago against Lebanon Valley, the Monarchs finally broke through and won in Revolution Ice Centre for the first time in program history.
Cooper had a team-high eight shots while Blanchard record four. DiSchiavi won a team-best nine faceoffs on 18 attempts while Decontie led the defense with five blocked shots. In total King's took 30 shots compared to 33 for the Falcons. The Monarchs blocked 16 shots.
Brandon Daigle earned the win in net making 31 saves.
The Monarchs will be back on home ice next weekend for a pair of games against Arcadia University and Lebanon Valley College. KC will take on AU on Friday night beginning at 7 pm before hosting the Dutchmen on Saturday night for a 7 pm puck drop.
