ROCHESTER, NY (December 5, 2021) --
Aaron Frenkel and
Josh Edwards scored goals for the King's College men's ice hockey team in a tough 5-2 loss on Sunday evening at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY.
The Monarchs got off to a strong start against the Golden Flyers as Frenkel scored his first goal of the season while picking up his eighth point 2:18 into the game. Frenkel had
Patrick Nowak with him on a two-on-one advantage inside the blue line following a Nazareth turnover but the first year decided to take it himself and ripped a shot right pass the Nazareth goaltender. Nowak and
Casey Gerstein were credited with assists on the goal. The assist was the first for Nowak and first career point while Gerstein recorded his third assist of the year and fifth point. King's kept the pressure on the Golden Flyers as
Jack Cooper missed wide on a pair of shots before Nowak,
Luke Babilon,
Mahingan Decontie, and
Jackson Grozelle all had shots saved by Matt Sayles in goal.
The Golden Flyers started to turn the momentum of the game in their favor in the final 10 minutes of the period as they kept the Monarchs lines on the ice for extended periods and put 11 shots on goal in a span of five minutes. Nazareth evened the score up at one with 1:51 to go in the period as Ryan Turse scored in second goal of the season off a rebound from Carmine Alberga. The Golden Flyers came out strong in the second period and scored twice in the first 4:22 to take a two-goal lead at 3-1. Nick Charron scored both goals for the hosts scoring first at 2:28 when he knocked in a loose puck following a saved shot right in the middle of a big pile in front of the goal. He then scored his third goal of the year a couple minutes later with a one-timer off a pass by Jeremy Swartz from behind the net.
King's cut into the advantage at 10:54 when
Alexander Ray intercepted a pass in the Nazareth offensive end, skated the puck up the ice to the left circle and sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to
Josh Edwards on the right side. Edwards received the pass and sent the puck into the back of the net for his third career goal and second of the season. The assist was Ray's first of his career and second point of the season.
The Monarchs fought hard to even thing up while receiving great goaltending from
Brandon Daigle who finished with a season-high 47 saves. The Golden Flyers scored twice in the third period to set the final score. Keith Davenport made it 4-2 at 8:34 of the period with a shot from just inside the right circle off a pass from Turse. Liam Quinlivan added an empty net goal with 1:51 left.
Nazareth had a 52-26 shot advantage in the game. Cooper led the Monarchs with four shots while Edwards, Babilon, and Nowak took three each. After stopping 18 shots in the first period, Daigle had 12 saves in the second and finished with 17 in the third period.
The Monarchs will return to Wilkes-Barre for finals and the holiday break before returning to action in 2022. King's will start the new year with a road trip to New Haven, Connecticut to take on Albertus Magnus on January 3. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the Ralph Walker Skating Rink.
