PLATTSBURGH, NY (January 8, 2022) -- The King's College men's ice hockey team saw a miraculous third period comeback fall just short as the Monarchs fell to Albertus Magnus 4-3 in overtime at the W.B. Mason Winter Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State on Saturday night.
The Monarchs rallied from a three-goal deficit in the third period against the Falcons sending the game into overtime. The victory over the Monarchs allowed Albertus Magnus to even the season series against King's after the Monarchs earned a 3-2 overtime win back in November at Revolution Ice Centre. It also allowed the Falcons to win the tournament after also defeating host Plattsburgh State last night.
The teams played a very physical scoreless first period that saw excellent goaltending by
Brandon Daigle and Logan Bateman. Daigle stopped all 13 shots he faced while Bateman was just as tough at the other end of the ice making eight saves in the period. The Falcons got on the board first at the 11:35 mark of the second period when Alex Gagnon scored his sixth goal of the season on a wraparound sneaking the puck just inside the right post. Colt Corpse made it 2-0 six minutes later with a somewhat controversial power play goal. Daigle made the save on a shot by Sam Anderson and it appeared his helmet came off before Corpse knocked in the rebound for his second of the season. After some discussions among the referees the goal stood giving the Falcons a two-goal advantage going into the final period.
Albertus Magnus increased the lead with a goal 65 seconds into the third period as Tyler Ignazzitto tipped in a pass from Ryan Herpy for his seventh of the year. The Monarchs began their furious comeback a few minutes later when
Mahingan Decontie redirected a shot from
Mauro D'Alessandro into the back of the net. The goal was Decontie's third of the year while D'Alessandro record his first career point in his Monarch debut.
Jakub Viedemann was also awarded an assist on the play, his third of the season.
The Monarch top line of
Jack Cooper,
Tyler Blanchard, and
Michael DiSchiavi cut the advantage down to one goal at 9:17 as Cooper scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year and sixth power play goal as he tipped in a pass from Blanchard. The assist for Blanchard was his team-leading ninth of the season while DiSchiavi recorded his seventh assist to give him 21 for his career and give him sole possession of the top spot for career assists in program history.
Nick Snyder evened the score up with 4:05 left with his first career goal off an assist by
Corson Searles. The assist for the first of the year for Seales as the mid-year transfer played his first game as a Monarch.
The Monarchs had a chance to win the game in regulation but shots by Cooper,
Josh Edwards, and Blanchard were blocked as the Falcons fought off a penalty kill. Albertus Magnus scored the game-winning goal 2:16 into the extra session as Alex Gagnon scored his second goal of the game on the power play.
Brandon Daigle had a monster game in goal making a season-high 48 saves while the Monarch defense also played well blocking 20 shots.
Nick Richards blocked a team-high three shots while six different skaters had two blocks and another five skaters had one block each. King's took 29 shots led by Cooper and Searles with four shots apiece.
The Monarchs will return to the ice tomorrow night to take on host SUNY Plattsburgh in the final game of the W.B. Mason Winter Classic. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
