WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 20, 2021) -- The King's College men's tennis team opened its 2021 season on Saturday at Kirby Park, taking on Wilkes University in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action. The Monarchs trailed 2-1 heading to singles play, but couldn't get much going in singles in falling 8-1 to the Colonels.
In doubles, senior
Austin Mackey and sophomore
Logan Gregory started the season with a strong victory at No. 1, as they outlasted Jack Maline and Colin Greeman 8-7 with an 9-6 win in the tiebreak. Senior
Jason Homschek and junior
Nick Harth were bested at No. 2 doubles 8-3 by WU's Cole Gibson and John Toussaint, while junior
Nick Holland and first-year
Aidan Temple fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
With King's needing to pick up four of the six singles' flights to earn the match, visiting Wilkes wouldn't allow that to happen in picking up victories in all six individual matches. The closest match in the second segment of play was at No. 2 doubles, as Gregory won the first set 7-5 but fell 6-2 in the second set to force the super-tiebreaker. Toussaint of Wilkes would control the tiebreak in pulling away for the 10-2 victory in the breaker.
Junior
Sam Cadman also battled well at No. 6, dropping a 7-5, 6-3 match to Jacob Bosler.
The Monarchs (0-1) will travel to York, PA next Saturday, March 27 for a non-conference match with the Spartans of York College.
