Keim Scores Twice to Lead Women's Soccer to 4-1 Win over SUNY Oswego in Home Opener

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 20, 2021) --- Senior Kara Keim found the back of the net twice to lead the King's College women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over SUNY Oswego in the home opener on Monday night at McCarthy Stadium.

The Lakers found the first opportunity of the match just over a minute in as Maggie Riordan missed just wide to the right on a shot from long range. Both sides battled hard to find possession in the early stages of the first half, as they tried to find the opening goal of the contest. SUNY Oswego's Liz Myers finally broke the deadlock in the 20th minute as she found herself one on one with Monarch goalkeeper Tara Bender and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

King's responded straight away as they took the ensuing kickoff down into the attacking third and Angelina Vargas launched a shot at net that sailed wide left. Having felt some momentum building, KC continued to apply pressure and eventually found the equalizer in the 30th minute off a long range strike from Kara Keim that soared into the top right corner. Chloe Weaver picked up the assist on the goal on a nice dish to Keim. The Monarchs were able to add another just before halftime as Leah Sankey netted her first collegiate goal on a breakaway as she placed her shot perfectly to beat out the Laker goalkeeper. Weaver initiated the play for her second assist of the game. King's held a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

The start of the second half saw more fighting for possession as SUNY Oswego tried to find the mark after giving up two unanswered goals to end the first half. Fortunately for KC, it was Keim who scored again in the 68th minute on another long range shot that flew into the top of the net. Angelina Vargas set up the goal and was credited the assist.

Kristina Keithley added to the tally in the 87th minute when she stole the ball off of a defenders foot and tucked her shot into the side netting bringing the Monarch lead to 4-1.

The Lakers held a slight 19-18 advantage in shots during the contest, but King's was able to capitalize on their opportunities. Bender made a career high 12 saves, including a crucial save on a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Haley Muehl made 3 saves for SUNY Oswego.

Madelyn Reuter led all Monarchs with four shots, while Keim added three shots, two of which found the back of the net. Weaver added two assists for King's, while Sankey and Keithley each scored a goal.

The Monarchs will look to continue their strong play when they return to the pitch on Thursday evening against Neumann University. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at McCarthy Stadium.
