Late Goal Spoils Field Hockey’s Upset Bid Of Moravian

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 28, 2021) -- The visiting Moravian University field hockey team scored with 1:25 left to defeat host King's College 2-1 on Tuesday night at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (3-5) did an excellent job holding a high-scoring Moravian (6-2) to their lowest goal scoring of the season. MU entered the game ranked 30th in Division III with 3.57 goals per game. A big part of the Monarch defense keeping the Greyhounds to their lowest output of the year was goalkeeper Ellie Glatz who made a season-high 11 saves including a few big-time stops. King's also frustrated the Greyhounds all game with their strong defense play.

King's took the lead in the 12th minute as Sara Whitesell found the back of the cage for the second straight game with her third goal of the year. Whitesell's goal came off a penalty corner attempt in which she sent a shot just inside the right post from the right wing.

The Grehounds tied it up a couple minutes into the second quarter as Sydney Anderson knocked in a rebound off a shot by Emily Wells in the 19th minute. The teams fought back and forth for much of the remainder of the half but neither team was able to get off a shot.

Vivian Williams nearly gave the Monarchs the lead 1:06 into the second half but her shot was stopped by Brooke Wilkinson. The Greyhound had a few good chances to score on a pair of penalty corners in the 39th and 40th minutes but each time Glatz stepped up and kicked the ball away. The score would stay tied all the way through the fourth quarter until Anderson scored her second goal of the game with 1:25 left to give Moravian the victory. Similar to her first goal, her game-winner came off a rebound on a shot saved by Glatz.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Madison, NJ to face FDU-Florham in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom contest beginning at 7 pm from Robert T. Shield Field.
