WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 4, 2021) -- The King's College field hockey team scored three times in the third quarter against Neumann University Saturday, busting open a 1-0 game at halftime to roll past the Knights 5-1 in non-conference action from McCarthy Stadium. Senior
Emily Sims scored a pair of goals in the second half to lead the charge for the Monarchs.
King's moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2016, and extended its win streak over Neumann to nine games. King's has tallied five goals in each of the last four wins over the Knights, and has outscored Neumann 38-5 over the win streak.
After a scoreless first 15 minutes, King's hopped out in front on the first goal of the season from junior
Sara Whitesell. On the play, sophomore
Ali Tedik chipped a pass into the middle of the circle and Whitesell one-timed a shot into the right corner for the lead.
King's kept pressuring but couldn't punch another goal through before the halftime intermission despite outshooting Neumann 11-2 in the opening 30 minutes. The offensive unit would explode though in the third quarter, doubling its lead to 2-0 just over a minute into the second half on a goal from
Danielle Runo.
Runo moved into the front of the circle and benefiting from a great cross from Tedik, pushing her shot into the right side for the goal. Minutes later, King's picked up a penalty corner and executed a nicely work play to extend the lead to 3-0 at 33:43 of the game.
The penalty corner started with a short pass into Sims, who hammered a cross a pass into the goal mouth and
Jessie Smalley swept her shot perfectly past the NU keeper for her first of the season.
The goals kept coming for King's, as Sims tallied her first of the season by converting a penalty stroke at 39:18 to make it a 4-0 King's edge. Both teams would score in the fourth quarter but Neumann wasn't able to pull closer as the Monarchs cruised to the win.
The two goals for Sims were the first two of her King's field hockey career, finishing with five points on the night. Runo led the Monarchs with six shots, while first-year
Hannah Chocallo added four shots as well.
Ellie Glatz made one save in cage for the Monarchs to earn her second win of the season.
King's outshot Neumann 28-3 for the contest, while holding a 12-5 lead in penalty corners. Megan Frame made 11 saves for the Knights in 45 minutes of action, while Ava Irwin posted three stops in relief action for the visitors.
The Monarchs are at the University of Scranton Wednesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. in play from the Quinn Athletics Campus in more non-conference play.
