Women's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match For Second Weekend in a Row

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 1, 2022) - The King's College women's volleyball team continued their non-conference home game winning ways with a pair of sweeps over the Immaculata University Mighty Macs and Lehman College Lightning on Saturday. With these wins the Monarchs have now won 25 non-conference games in a row at McGrane Gymnasium and improve to 11-4 on the season. Immaculata is now an even 5-5 after beating Lehman in the second game of the tri-match while Lehman falls to 1-8 on the year.

vs. Immaculata University - W, 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-19):
The opening game saw five ties and four different lead changes. Trailing 14-11, the Monarchs went on a 12-4 run which featured kills by Emma Monson, Kayla Sondberg and Joy Kindall as well as a service ace by Morgan Bryant. The Mighty Macs made things close towards the end. But the Monarchs maintained took the first set 25-22.

King's was looking to get off to a quick start in the following set. They did just that with a 14-4 stretch right out of the gate. Eight different Monarchs registered kills as the team took the set by a commanding score of 25-9.

In the third set, the Monarchs again found themselves trailing 14-11. But they responded with another run, this one of 10-4. The Mighty Macs again crawled back into it but in the end the Monarchs came out on top 25-22 to sweep the Mighty Macs.

As a team the Monarchs outplayed the opposition in nearly every stat category putting up 37 kills, seven aces, 34 assists and 78 digs while hitting .208 as a team. Kindall again led the attack with 12 kills and two blocks. She was followed by Sondberg with 11 kills and Shepherd with six. Morgan Bryant had three services aces and Morgan Williams had a couple herself. Bryant and Williams also tied for the team lead with 14 digs, followed by 13 from Devan Moses. Carly Shire had the most assists in the first matchup with 22. Keely Hoban had seven assists and Adriana Conforti tallied three. 

The Mighty Macs got 11 kills from first year Mia Esposito, 17 digs from junior Lily Burnette and 22 assists from junior Emily Ettien.

vs. Lehman College - W, 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-6):

Coming off a break in-between tri-match games, King's College led from the get-go against Lehman. As a team the Monarchs hit 0.391 in the first set. Bella Salvia, Kathy Shepherd and Shire each served up aces as they took the first set by a dominating 25-7 margin.

The Monarchs did not let up in the second set, coming out with an early 15-3 lead. They had their biggest attacking performance on the day with 19 kills to win the second one 25-14. 

They looked to end the day quick over Lehman in the third set, and they did just that. The Monarchs scored the first six points as Confrti had a pair of kills and Salvia a service ace. The team concluded the day by another massive margin, taking the final set 25-6. 

The Monarchs did not trail at any point in the second match and they outperformed the opposition in every category hitting .421 with 38 kills, 12 aces, two blocks, 36 assists and 45 digs. This time around Conforti led the team with 10 kills as Kindall followed with seven and Sondberg with six. Salvia served up four aces. Hoban had three aces herself and Sondberg two. Shire again led the team with 21 assist and Morgan Bryant had a team-high 14 digs, followed by 11 from Sondberg. 

Junior Daria Hernandez had the most digs for the Lightning with three while senior Heder Rodriguez and sophomore Selena Mitchell had two service aces each.

The Monarchs will look to bring this momentum back with them to McGrane Gymnasium on Wednesday as they will seek their first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom win of the season against DeSales University. The action will begin at 7:00 p.m.
