WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 12, 2022) --- The King's College women's soccer team trailed late into the second half before
Leah Sankey's 88
th minute tallied secured a 1-1 draw against visiting Wilkes University on Wednesday night from McCarthy Stadium. With the tie, King's moves to 7-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the MAC Freedom, while Wilkes moves to 2-9-2 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.
Wilkes (2-9-2, 0-3-1) came out of the gates looking to put the pressure on King's (7-2-3, 1-1-1) who returned to action for the first time since October 4, as the Colonels tallied the first seven shots of the game. Graduate student goalkeeper
Tara Bender was up to the task however, making saves on all three efforts that were on target. The Monarchs got their first shot in the 34
th minute on an effort from senior
Angelina Falcone, before the Colonels tallied the last four shots of the half.
At the half Wilkes held an 11-1 advantage on shots, however that edge was not indicative of the play as both sides had opportunities.
Coming out of the half, Wilkes once again was on the front foot, tallying the first shot of the frame 16 seconds in, before the Colonels opened the scoring in the 54
th minute on a goal from Erica Feese. Following the Colonels goal, the tide of the match shifted in favor of the Monarchs culminating in a straight red card to Cesia Diaz of Wilkes, putting King's a woman up. With the player advantage King's was all over Wilkes, but could not find an equalizer, until sophomore
Raina Adelman's first ball across made its way to sophomore
Liz Porto, who squared it back to the center of the goal, where sophomore
Leah Sankey was waiting to tap it into the open net, evening the score up at 87:09. With the score tied, both teams pushed to find a winner, but neither side was successful, as the match ended 1-1.
Wilkes finished the match with a 19-5 edge on total shots, and an 8-2 advantage on shots on target, but again the stats did not tell the whole story, as it was an even back-and-forth affair.
The Monarchs' attack was led by Sankey, who picked up two points on the goal, converting on her only effort of the contest, while Porto added one point with the assist, collecting King's second shot on target. Falcone tallied two shots, while first-year
Megan Thompson added one. Bender made the start in net, making seven saves on eight shots.
Wilkes was led by Feese who totaled two points on the goal, tallying three total shots, with two on target. Cate Schoeniger, Katie Sites, and Holly Feese all added two shots in the contest. Hannah Landis got the nod in goal, making one save on two shots.
King's heads out on the road for a quick stop in Glenside, PA to take on Arcadia University in a MAC Freedom contest on Saturday, with kickoff set for 2:30 pm.
