GREENSBURG, PA (October 14, 2022)- The King's College Monarchs women's volleyball team continued their success outside of conference play on Friday night. The team swept the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats 3-0. This win extends the Monarchs winning streak to 13 non-conference games. The team has also won 16 straight sets against non-conference opponents. With the win the Monarchs improve to 14-6 while the Bobcats fall to 1-15.
The Monarchs got things started off on the right foot with a 7-3 lead thanks to kills by
Kayla Sondberg,
Joy Kindall and
Kathy Shepherd. They trailed just twice in the opening set, but the Bobcats kept things close. With the score tied up at 15,
Carly Shire got in on the attack with a kill. This propelled a late 9-5 run. The Monarchs took the first set 25-20.
The team trailed 15-5 in the second set before a service ace by
Devan Moses and a kill from
Bella Salvia led a five point streak, as they pulled within five. The Monarchs immediately followed this with a 7-2 stretch which tied things up at 17. Set two was knotted up the till the 20th point when an attack by
Theresa Lynch and a tip by Shepherd sealed the late 5-1 run for a 25-21 victory.
The third set was another competitive one as it saw nine different ties. With the score tied late in the set at 17, the Monarchs got three big kills from Shepherd, two from Kindall and one from
Mia Campanile as part of their late 8-2 stretch.
Morgan Williams closed the door with a service ace as King's finished the sweep with a 25-19 win.
Kindall and Shepherd each registered double digit kills with 12 and 11 on the night. Campanile was third with five kills. Kiindall hit a game-high .435. Williams, Moses and
Morgan Bryant each had a service ace while Shire and
Emma Monson each had a block.
Keely Hoban led the team with 17 assists followed by Shire with 13 and Williams with two. Bryant had a team-high 12 digs while Williams had 10 and
Adriana Conforti put up nine.The Monarchs outplayed the Bobcats in every stat category. As a team they hit .190 with 33 kills, four service aces, two blocks, 35 assists and 62 digs.
For the Bobcats, senior outside hitter Emma Halutick registered a game-high 19 kills. Senior middle blocker Savanna Stephens followed with seven and junior outside hitter Madison Martin had three. Halutick and Martin also each had a service ace. Junior setter Kaylee George recorded 15 assists and first year defensive specialist Chloe Lukondi had 12 digs.
The Monarchs will be right back in action tomorrow as they will look to continue their tri-match success. They will head to Pittsburgh, PA and face Hilbert College at 2:00 p.m. followed by host school La Roche University at 4:00 p.m.
