Monarchs Fall to the Saxons in Tough Battle

WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 19, 2022) – A late run for the Monarchs was not enough to overcome the deficit as King's fell to the Saxons of Alfred University today 16-6. The scoring for the Saxons was spread out as 6 members of the squad had multiple goals and 9 total members recorded a goal.
 
The Saxons opened up scoring under a minute into the contest as Drew Cartwright found the back of the net at the 14:01 mark. The Monarchs held out until the 9:26 mark when Paul Forte notched his first of the game. Senior Brendan Gambino stopped the drought for the Monarchs as he put one by the goalie with just about 4 minutes left in the first. The Saxons put 2 more on the board before the close of the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the break thanks to Kevin Matson and Josh Hauman.
 
Another 4-1 quarter in favor of the Saxons gave them an 8-2 lead heading into the halftime break. Neither team scored for the first 8 minutes until Caleb DuBois broke open the scoring, netting his first of the game. Shortly after, Justin Mosher snuck another one through for the Saxons. Brendan Gambino stopped the run with his second of the game at the 4:50 mark of the second quarter. Paul Forte scored his second and third goals of the game to close out the half for Alfred.
 
Alfred's Kevin Matson scored his second of the game on the Saxon's first possession of the second half just 39 seconds into the third quarter. It wasn't until 4 minutes later that senior Alec Martin found his shot in the net, off the assist from Gabe Vansuch, as he took advantage of an extra-man opportunity to make it a 9-3 game in favor of Alfred.
 
Josh Hauman, Caleb DuBois, Dawson Felenchak, and Justin Mosher went on a run for the Saxons making it a 13-3 game with 4:25 left in the third quarter. Graduate student Gabe Vansuch put another on the board for the Monarchs with the assist from Ryan Barnes. The Saxons held a 13-4 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
 
Adrian Romero opened up scoring in the fourth thanks to a Monarch penalty. First year Ben Spencer took advantage of 2 man up opportunities to close the gap to 14-6. Jonathan Kay responded in the like, netting 2 of his own to close out the scoring as the Saxons went on to be victorious with a final score of 16-6.
 
Brendan Gambino and Ben Spencer led the way with 2 goals apiece while Gabe Vansuch would lead the points with 3 total on 1 goal and 2 assists. Matt Dellapi and Ryan Barnes each tallied an assist. Alex Tristan anchored the defense with 2 caused turnovers while picking up 2 groundballs. Matt Dellapi went 9-25 at the faceoff dot while snagging 4 groundballs. Junior Jackson Campbell got the start and made 3 saves while junior Matt Wall took over in the second half to make 8 saves while picking up 5 groundballs. 
 
Paul Forte led the Saxons with a hat trick while a handful of others recorded a multi goal game. Scott Kimiecik got the start and made 9 saves along the way.
 
The Monarchs return to action this upcoming Wednesday, March 23 as the travel up to Marywood for a 6:00 PM start.
