Monarchs Win in Dramatic Fashion Over DeSales

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 22, 2022) -- Senior Andrew Steidle worked a one-out walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to earn the walk-off win, 11-10, in dramatic fashion over DeSales University on Friday afternoon at Lipo Field in MAC Freedom play. King's improves to 10-17 overall and 3-13 in the MAC Freedom, while the Bulldogs fall to 16-14 with a 9-7 conference mark.
DeSales (16-14, 9-7 MAC Freedom) took the early 2-0 lead in the opening stanza on just one hit before adding another tally in the third on one hit to lead, 3-0.
King's (10-17, 3-13 MAC Freedom) got one back in the bottom of the third as senior Matt Bound got on with a lead off double down the left field line, advanced to third during sophomore Gregory Ahlstrom's at bat, and scored on a balk to close within 3-1.
The Bulldogs answered in the fourth as they plated two runs on three hits to push their lead to 5-1. DeSales saw another run cross in the sixth and two more in the seventh before plating their final runs of the game in the eighth to take a daunting 10-1 advantage over the Monarchs.
The King's offense came alive in the bottom of the eighth as they scored four runs on two hits to close within 10-5. Steidle and junior Will Hronich worked one-out walks to set up a three-run blast from first year Zach Day to right. Junior Brandon Loner got things started again with a one-out walk before advancing to third thanks to junior Will McIntosh's at bat and a single through the left side from sophomore Chase Yochem. A walk from senior Seth Laky loaded the bases to set up an RBI walk from Bound to post the 10-5 score heading into the final inning of play.
The Monarchs defense made quick work of the Bulldogs as they retired all three batters in the top of the ninth to set up the dramatic finish. Six straight singles coupled with a passed ball and a wild pitch brought the Monarchs within 10-9.
With first open, DeSales intentionally walked Bound with one out to load the bases. Junior John Barry stepped in to pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to set up Steidles game-winning RBI walk to give King's the 11-10 in the MAC Freedom series opener.
