Second Period Dooms Monarchs in Return Home

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 6, 2022) -- In their first home game in 16 days, the King's College women's lacrosse team was outscored 6-3 in the second period as the Monarchs fell, 13-9, to Lycoming College in MAC Freedom play in McCarthy Stadium. In the loss on Wednesday afternoon, the Monarchs fall to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while the Warriors improve to 5-6 with a 1-2 conference mark.

King's (1-9, 0-3 MAC Freedom) started the game firing on all cylinders, scoring two quick goals thanks to first year Alli Lindsay and senior Natasha Koslop with 12:42 to go in the opening period. Lycoming (5-6, 1-2 MAC Freedom) netted a goal with 6:29 left as the Monarchs led, 2-1, after one quarter of play.

The second period saw nine total goals scored between the two teams, starting with a Monarchs goal from Koslop off a feed from Lindsay with 12:37 remaining in the half. The Warriors then scored four straight goals over the next 5:07 of play to take a 5-3 lead over the Monarchs. Both teams found the goal two more times down the stretch as first year Kyleigh Dunworth scored twice to end the half trailing 7-5.

Sophomore Olivia Benner found Koslop just 27 seconds into the second half to close within one, 7-6. The teams traded goals as Koslop netted her fourth of the game with 8:14 to go in the third. Lycoming then scored twice within 29 seconds of each other to push their advantage to 10-7 with 6:10 remaining in the period. Lindsay struck again for her 20th goal of the season with 1:41 left in the third, down just 10-8.

A much slower final period saw the Warriors score two early goals as the Monarchs trailed, 12-8, with 9:25 to play. Koslop scored her fifth tally of the game thanks to a feed from Lindsay with 4:17 remaining, but the Warriors tacked on the final goal of the game with 3:21 left to hand the Monarchs the 13-9 loss at home in MAC Freedom play.

Koslop totaled a team-best five points, scoring five goals on 12 shots, with three draw controls and two ground balls. Lindsay added four points on two goals and two assists with four ground balls and two draw controls. Sophomore Sidney Bush recorded the loss as the Monarchs starter as she made eight saves and picked up a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore Sarah McCormick also picked up four ground balls, while junior Jessie Smalley totaled seven saves in the second half with four ground balls. Additionally, senior Emily Sims totaled five draw controls in the loss.

Lycoming's Erika Boyer totaled seven points on two goals and five assists, while Tess Arnold posted team-highs of six ground balls and five draw controls. Zoe Stauffer earned the win as she saved 12 shots in goal.

The Monarchs will enjoy the weekend off before returning to play on Wednesday, April 13 as they make the short trip up the mountain to take on the Cougars of Misericordia University at 4:00 p.m.
