WILLIAMSPORT, PA (September 1, 2022) --- Trailing 2-1 in the second half, King's College women's soccer team rallied with two goals in a four-minute span to defeat the Penn College Wildcats 3-2 on Thursday afternoon.
King's come out of the gates raring to go, as
Ashley Dukehart and
Madelyn Reuter both fired shots at the Penn College net within the first three minutes. However, it did not take long for the Monarchs to open the scoring as Reuter was able to beat the Wildcats goalkeeper Nicole Lichtinger to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
King;s continued their strong start firing off two more shots, before the Wildcats tallied their first. Nonetheless, Penn College responded in the 15
th minute as Cassie Johnson took a pass from Sara Darlington, beating King's goalkeeper
Tara Bender to knot the score at 1-1.
Both sides traded chances for the remainder of the half, with King's having more of the opportunities, but the teams headed into the half-time break all square.
At the half King's was outshooting Penn College 10-5, while also holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
To start the second half, the Wildcats came out flying, as Teagan Willey beat Bender in the 48
th minute to put Penn College on top 2-1.
The Monarchs responded however, as
Anya Chervak scored her first career goal in the 58
th minute, off a rebound, to tie the game at 2, before
Leah Sankey found the back of the net four minutes later, off an assist from
Liz Porto, to put King's back on top at 3-2.
With King's on top, Penn College began to push for an equalizer, but that never came. King's kept up the pressure, and limited the opportunities for the Wildcats to tie up the game.
Down the stretch the Monarchs hemmed the Wildcats deep in their own half as they got three consecutive corners spanning the 83
rd and 84
th minutes.
Sankey, Chervak, and Reuter led the way, as each collected a goal, while Porto tallied an assist.
King's led the match in shots, outshooting Penn College 19-10, while also leading in shots on targets 11-7. Additionally, the Monarchs finished with nine corners, as opposed to just two for the Wildcats.
With the win, new head coach Craig Wilkinson collects his first victory with the Monarchs.
King's will look to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2017, as the Monarchs host Neumann University, for their home open on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 pm.
