WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 10, 2022) -- In the second time in as many days, the King's College field hockey team fell in a heartbreaking fashion as a goal on a penalty stroke just 4:19 into the overtime period saw Immaculata University take the 2-1 win over the Monarchs. With the loss in the non-conference contest at McCarthy Stadium, the Monarchs fall to 1-3, while the Mighty Macs pick up their first win of the season and improve to 1-3.
An evenly matched opening quarter saw Immaculata (1-3) capitalize on one of their two shots as Maddy Edwards notched her first goal of the season on a tip in off Lauren Vandenbraak's pass in the seventh minute to give the Mighty Macs the early 1-0 lead. King's (1-3) fired off two shots in the final minute of the period, but they came up just short as they trailed 1-0 after the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter saw plenty of back-and-forth action as neither team was able to tack on a goal, heading into the locker room with the Mighty Macs ahead, 1-0.
It was in the third that the Monarchs converted on a penalty corner inserted by
Hannah Robbins, and as
Jessie Smalley fired in a pass, it was senior
Vivian Williams who delivered the game-tying goal in the 36th minute for her first goal of the season.
King's maintained control in the fourth quarter, but Immaculata's defense closed the game strong and forced the overtime period for the second game in a row for the Monarchs.
In heartbreaking fashion, the King's defense delivered a strong play on a break away by the Mighty Macs, but the officials awarded Immaculata a penalty stroke. Lauren Buckel stepped up and narrowly snuck her shot into the bottom left corner of the net, barely crossing the line, to give Immaculata the 2-1 overtime win over the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon.
First year
Emma Bealla led the King's offense with three shots, including two on target, while seniors
Sara Whitesell and
Jessie Smalley and sophomore
Hannah Chocallo tallied two shots each. Williams was extremely efficient this afternoon, scoring on her lone shot of the game.
Three different Mighty Macs posted a shot in the loss, with Maddy Edwards and Lauren Buckel each converting on their opportunities.
Inside the box score, the Monarchs held the ege in shots (11-3), shots on goal (7-2), and penalty corners (11-7) in the upsetting loss.
King's will be back on their home turf on Wednesday afternoon as they host the Susquehanna University River Hawks in non-conference play at 4:00 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
