Monarchs Falls to Penn State Abington But Defeat Wilson in Tri-Match

CHAMBERSBURG, PA (SEPTEMBER 10, 2022) -- The King's College women's volleyball team saw mixed results in their first tri-match of the season. The first match against the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions saw the Monarchs fall 0-3. However, the team was able to bounce back with a solid 3-0 win over the Wilson College Phoenix in the second match. With the tri-match split the Monarchs are an even 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Penn State Abington won both games improving to 4-1 on the season while Wilson College lost both to drop to 0-6 on the season.

vs. Penn State Abington L (0-3 - 21-25, 15-25, 22-25):

King's went neck-and-neck with Penn State-Abington to start before the Monarchs went on a 5-1 run. Only the Nittany Lions would tie the game up at 10 apiece before going on a 12-5 run which was sufficient enough to take the opening set over the Monarchs 25-21.

Looking to rebound in the second set the Monarchs initially kept up  before the Nittany Lions went on a 16-5 run to close out the second set 25-15.

In a must-win third set the Monarchs kept the scoring knotted up until the very end, thanks to a three late kills by senior captain Kayla Sondberg. But the Nittany Lions again got the edge sweeping King's by a mere 25-22 in the third set.

Sondberg led the Monarchs with 10 kills in the first game followed by Joy Kindall with seven and Theresa Lynch with five.  Transfer Adriana Conforti contributed big in the match with a team-leading 17 assists and two service aces. The teams each had three blocks in the game. Bella Salvia and Conforti each had two blocks and Sondberg had the other.

Jenny McAnaney led the Nittany Lions with 18 kills while Jackie Lewis had four service aces. As a team they registered 11 service aces.

vs. Wilson College (W 3-0 - 25-13, 25-14, 25-17):
The Monarchs looked to rebound in game two against Wilson College. In the first set they did just that as they pulled away early on a 20-7 run to take the set in commanding fashion 25-13.

The Monarchs were able to carry this momentum into the second set in a solid team effort where five different Monarchs registered kills. Back-to-back service aces by Devan Moses late in the set helped the team secure a 25-14 victory.

The Monarchs stormed out of the gate in the third set scoring the first six points. They were able to prevent the Phoenix from going on any significant runs and capped off their dominance with five points to earn themselves a 25-17 victory in the set and 3-0 win.

Three different Monarchs had two service aces in the game including Moses, Conforti and Morgan Williams. Kindall and Shepherd each had three blocks while Keely Hoban led the team with 15 assists in the set. Campanile led the team in kills with eight. She was followed by Shepherd with seven and Kindall with six. As a team the Monarchs had a .267 hitting percentage.
