WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 16, 2022) - In front of an electric crowd for homecoming weekend, the King's College Monarchs women's volleyball team swept the Centenary University (New Jersey) Cyclones 3-0. This was their fourth consecutive win and 18th straight victory at McGrane Gymnasium. The Monarchs improve to 5-2 on the season while the Cyclones fall to 1-5.
After some clutch performances the plays in the previous night
Bella Salvia again got off to a great start with a kill and a service ace which were among the Monarchs first points. The team was down 9-4 in the first set before they went on a 7-1 run thanks to kills by
Joy Kindall and
Theresa Lynch as well as a
Morgan Williams service ace. The teams traded points before the Monarchs had a late 12-3 surge where
Keely Hoban served up three aces as the Monarchs took set one by the final of 25-19. The Monarchs registered a .237 hitting percentage with 12 kills in the set.
The second set was the most competitive of the match with 14 ties and six lead changes. With the score tied up at 21, the Monarchs scored four straight points capped off by a
Joy Kindall kill to clinch the second set 25-21. Williams added two more service aces in the set while Salvia had three kills.
The third and final set saw the Monarchs pull away early on a 9-2 run. Kindall had three straight kills as she led the Monarchs offense with 11 kills on the night. This was the fourth time this season that the first year has led the team in kills. Five of them came in the final set. Each time the Cyclones looked to be creeping back into the set, the Monarchs held them back.
Keely Hoban went on another serving tear to cap off the night. The sophomore served up three consecutive aces late. They were part of the final six straight points the scored by the team to emerge victorious 25-16 and complete the sweep.
The Monarchs served up a memorable night as the team had 12 service aces versus nine for the Cyclones. Six of the 12 were by
Keely Hoban while Williams added three and Salvia had two. Salvia was second on the team with nine kills followed by Sondberg's three. Lynch and
Kathy Shepherd had two blocks on the night while Hoban again led the team with 11 assists followed by
Carly Shire's nine and two by
Morgan Williams. Williams led the team in digs for the third time season with 14. This was followed by
Morgan Bryant's 12 and Sondberg's three by. Kindall led the Monarchs with a .409 hitting percentage followed by
Bella Salvia who hit .292. As a team the Monarchs outhit the Cyclones .167 to .085.
Mya Burnett led the Cyclones with 28 kills and a .250 hitting percentage while Kim Stallworth led the team with 19 assists. Stallworth also tied for the team lead in digs with 13 along with Alyssa Bizzaro. As a team the Cyclones registered 31 kills on the night
The home stretch will continue on Monday for the Monarchs as they will host Penn State Hazleton at 7:00 PM before hosting Stevens in their first conference home matchup on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. The Cyclones will continue their road trip on Saturday at Keystone College in La Plume, PA.
