Porto Scores Again, Women's Soccer Earns Hard-Fought 1-1 Draw vs. Rutgers-Newark

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 17, 2022) --- The King's College women's soccer remained unbeaten to start the 2022 season battling in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders, Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium.

It was a physical game, as both sides came out ready to play, but it was the Scarlet Raiders who got the first three shots of the game off, including one where King's goalkeeper, Tara Bender, was tasked with making the save. King's settled in as Leah Sankey got the Monarchs first shot of the game in the 11th minute, before a run of four shots and four corner kicks for King's over the next 14 minutes. The teams traded possession before Angelina Falcone played a gorgeous ball over the top onto the path of Liz Porto, who corralled the pass and beat the Rutgers-Newark keeper, to put King's on top 1-0 in the 39th minute. However, it was not long before the Scarlet Raiders equalized as Leila Ettayebi found the back of the net, knotting the score up at 1, in the 42nd minute, which is how the teams headed into the break.

At the half, King's had an 8-6 advantage on total shots, and a 6-3 lead on corners, while the Scarlet Raiders had a slim 4-3 advantage on shots on targets. It was a physical first half, as Rutgers-Newark was called for seven fouls, while King's was called for two.

The second half started like the first, as the Scarlet Raiders, tallied the first four shots of the half, forcing Bender into another save. Once again, the Monarchs settled in, and began looking for the go-ahead marker, as King's continued looking for the ball over the top, firing off four shots in the frame. King's had the better of the chances down the stretch, but neither squad was able to find a game winner, as the teams settled for the 1-1 draw.

Rutgers-Newark finished with a slim 14-12 advantage on total shots, while the squads finished even with five shots on target a piece. Meanwhile, King's held the corners advantage, 6-5. The physicality remained throughout the match, as the fouls finished with 13 for the Scarlet Raiders and seven against the Monarchs.

Falcone and Raina Adelman led the Monarchs with three shots each, while Grace Conover added two shots. Porto was clinical on the day, tallying her goal on her only shot of the game. Bender got the start in net, making four saves in the draw.

Camila Howard led the Scarlet Raiders tallying four shots, while Tamia Howell added three shots. Ettayebi was strong as she collected two shots, both of which were on target, picking up the goal. Katie McLaughlin got the start between the sticks and matched Bender with four saves.

The Monarchs return to action on Wednesday afternoon, as they host Alfred University at McCarthy Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. as the team looks to continue its longest unbeaten streak to start a season in program history.
