Porto Powers Monarchs Past Alfred

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 21, 2022) -- Sophomore Liz Porto continued her dominant performance so far this season as she netted two goals to lift the King's College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Alfred University in the non-conference match on Wednesday night. The Monarchs continue their historic start to the season, improving to 5-0-2 overall to mark the best start in program history since beginning the season 5-1 in 1997. With the loss in McCarthy Stadium, the Saxons fall to 3-3-0.

After a quick shot by Alfred (3-3-0) just 1:13 in the game, King's (5-0-2) fired off three straight shots to put pressure on the Saxons' defense. On the next shot, Porto broke through as she got a nice feed across the box from fellow-sophomore Raina Adelman to put King's on the board, 1-0, in just the 15th minute of play. The play seemed even down the stretch of the opening half, but with just 1:09 left before the break, the Saxons netted their lone goal of the contest thanks to a tally from Julia Flaitz to see the scoreboard read 1-1 at the half.

In a half that saw the Monarchs hold a strong 10-3 advantage in shots over Alfred, it was not until the 83rd minute that Porto delivered the game winner. King's moved the ball down the field and made a strong attempt at a shot before Porto pounced on a pass out from the Saxons goalie and sliced the ball into the bottom of the net to put the Monarchs ahead, 2-1. The Monarchs defense held Alfred to just two more shots in the final moments of the match up as they earned a gritty 2-1 win in McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Porto led King's with six shots, including four on target, to total four points on her two goals. Adelman, senior Angelina Falcone, and sophomore Leah Sankey each tallied two shots as well in the win with Adelman picking up a point on her first-half assist. In goal, graduate student Tara Bender made two saves on just three shots faced to earn another complete-game win.

The Saxons offense was led by three shots with one on target from Alyssa Smith. Goalkeeper Kiani Barnard-Pratt totaled seven saves on nine shots faced in the full ninety-minute contest.

King's posted a strong 17-5 edge in shots in the game, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on target. The Monarchs also recorded four corner kick opportunities as opposed to just one for the Saxons.

The Monarchs will look to continue their four-game home stand and extend their win streak with a non-conference match up with Albright College on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
