LA PLUME, PA (September 20, 2022) -- Senior
Jessie Smalley found the back of the net twice on Tuesday evening, both in the final quarter, to lift the King's College field hockey team to a 3-1 win over Keystone College in non-conference play. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 3-4 overall while the Giants fall to 3-4 with the loss on their home turf in La Plume, Pa.
King's (3-4) dominated the opening minutes of action, firing off six shots and earning two penalty corners while holding Keystone (3-4) to just two shots and a corner, as they set the tone for the match up. After a save by junior
Ellie Glatz, the Monarchs drove down the field as sophomore
Hannah Chocallo netted a goal off a feed from graduate student
Hannah Robbins to put King's ahead, 1-0, in the 21st minute. King's saw a few more opportunities down the stretch before holding the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
A more evenly-matched third period saw each team tally three shots, but neither team could capitalize as the Monarchs maintained their lead heading into the final stanza. It took just 61 seconds into the fourth quarter for Smalley to find an opening and fire of a shot on the Giants' goalie to increase the King's lead to 2-0. Just under two minutes later, Smalley struck again as she took a rebound of her own shot and picked up her second tally of the game and third of the season to shut the door on a Keystone comeback.
Keystone avoided the shutout by netting their own goal after a penalty corner opportunity in the 48th minute, but King's would control much of the play in the reaminder of the game as they cruised to a 3-1 win over Keystone in the non-conference contest.
Smalley recorded her first multi-goal game of the season, totaling four points on two goals on a team-high five shots, including four on target. Chocallo added two points on her first-half goal off two shots, while Robbins recorded one point with her assist on Chocallo's goal. In addition, senior
Sara Whitesell, junior
Ali Tedik, and sophomore
Emma Clark all added three shots in the win. Glatz posted three saves in goal tonight as well for the Monarchs.
Maria Tomada led the Giants with two points on her goal off two shots, while Miranda Masica tallied a point with her assist. Goalkeeper Casey Stratton posted nine saves in the first 42:50 of play while allowing one goal.
As a team, the Monarchs dominated the shot totals, 18-9, as well as the shots on goal, 13-4. King's also held the advantage in penalty corners, 7-3, over the Giants.
King's is back at home in McCarthy Stadium on Thursday evening as they host Cedar Crest College at 7:00 p.m.
