MADISON, NJ (September 29, 2022) -- For the third time this season, the King's College field hockey team fell in an overtime period as they dropped 2-1 decision at Drew University on Thursday evening. The Monarchs fall to 5-6 overall, while the Rangers improve to 4-3.
King's (5-6) struck first as sophomore
Hannah Chocallo intercepted a pass before settling the ball and blasting it into the cage to put the Monarchs ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute. The Monarchs also dominated the opening period as they out shot Drew (4-3), 7-2. Play stalled in the second period as neither team capitalized on their opportunities as the Monarchs held their 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Rangers picked up their intensity in the third, but the Monarchs defense shut the door on a comeback effort in the period as King's continued to hold their 1-0 lead as the game entered the final 15 minutes.
Drew capitalized on their third penalty corner of the fourth with just 16 seconds left in regulation. Seven seconds after Maxine Lloyd inserted the ball off the corner, she was given a pass from Lauren Cagliostro to net her fourth goal of the season and send the non-conference game into extra time.
A heartbreaking finish came just 31 seconds into the overtime period as Trisha Dominick settled in off another Rangers penalty corner, fired in a shot from the top of the circle that ricocheted off a defender and into the cage to hand the Monarchs the 2-1 overtime loss on Thursday night at Ranger Stadium.
Taylor Giugliano led King's with three shots, all on target, while
Sara Whitesell,
Ali Tedik Emma Clark, and Chocallo all posted two shots in the loss. Goalkeeper
Ellie Glatz recorded seven saves in the full 60:31 of play.
Trisha Dominick paced Drew as she tallied seven shots with six on target while adding a defensive save. Olyivia Jackson nearly matched Glatz's efforts as she made six saves in the win.
As a team, the Monarchs totaled 12 shots with eight on goal, adding eight penalty corners.
King's will take a break from their play as they return to the turf on Friday, October 7 in a MAC Freedom matchup at DeSales. The conference contest will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa.
