ASTON, PA (September 3, 2022) -- Two first-quarter goals set the tone to start the 2022 season as the King's College field hockey team posted a dominant 4-0 win over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon.
King's (1-0) had an onslaught of shots to start the contest before senior
Jessie Smalley capitalized on a feed from junior
Ali Tedik to find the goal at the 5:10 mark of the opening stanza. Just under two minutes later, fellow-senior
Sara Whitesell knocked in a shot off the goalie pads at the 6:58 mark to put the Monarchs ahead 2-0 in just the first 15 minutes of action.
Several penalty corners for the Monarchs saw Neumann's (1-1) defense hold King's at bay as the two teams went into the half time break with King's holding the 2-0 lead. Another quiet third period set up an exciting finish in the King's season opener.
Whitesell delivered her second goal of the season at the 46:55 mark just as she did her first, off the Knights' goalie pads to put King's ahead, 3-0. First year
Emma Bealla netted her first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute off another assist from Tedik, her second of the game, to post the final tally and give the Monarchs their dominant 4-0 win.
Whitsell was efficient as she delivered two goals on six shots, including four on goal, to lead King's in the win. Sophomore
Emma Clark and Bealla totaled five shots a piece, including four on goal to add to the 30-shot effort by the Monarchs in the win. Junior
Ellie Glatz was solid in the full-game effort, making a save to earn the win.
The Knights saw two shots from Rachel Koerner to pace the offense, while Meg Frame posted 14 saves despite giving up four goals in 51:58 of action.
As a team, the Monarchs out shot the Knights 30-2 and held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Monarchs are set for their home opener on Wednesday, September 7 as they host the University of Scranton in McCarthy Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
