READING, PA (September 5, 2022) --- The King's College women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to earn a hard fought 1-1 draw against Alvernia University in Reading on Monday night.
With the tie, King's moves to 2-0-1 on the season, remaining unbeaten, while Alvernia moves to 0-1-1 for the year.
It was a back-and-forth affair early on, as the teams exchanged shots in the opening 15 minutes of the match, before the Golden Wolves broke the scoring in the 20
th minute as Gabriella Fontana put Alvernia up 1-0. Following the opening goal, both squads continued to alternate shots, as the game headed into the halftime break at 1-0.
At the half King's lead in the shots department, outshooting Alvernia 12-7, with the shots on target even at six a piece.
The Monarchs came out of the break looking to tie up the score and that's just what they did.
Liz Porto corralled the rebound and put the ball into the net, as
Megan Thompson and
Leah Sankey picked up the assists on the goal, knotting the score at 1-1 in the 53
rd minute.
After the tying goal, the intensity of the match picked up, as both the Monarchs and Golden Wolves looked for the winning goal. Much like the first half, the squads once again traded shots, but neither team was able to breakthrough as the game finished in a 1-1 draw.
King's finished with a 20-15 advantage on total shots, with an 11-9 edge on shots on target, while it was even on fouls, with both teams being called for nine each.
Porto paced the offense, tallying the lone goal, which was also her first career marker, as Thompson and Sankey each collected an assist.
Tara Bender was solid between the sticks once again, finishing the evening with eight saves.
On the Alvernia side, Fontana led the offense collecting the lone goal, while Brynn Bock finished with 10 saves in the Golden Wolves goal.
The Monarchs return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the squad heads out to Immaculata, PA to take on the Mighty Macs of Immaculata, looking to continue their unbeaten run to start the season, with kickoff scheduled for 4 pm.
