The Coaches: Jeff Knarr is in his 13th season (12th with a season) with the Monarchs, as he is only the second coach of King's College football since 1991. Knarr took over for Rich Mannello, who was the head coach since football was reinstated at King's in 1993. Today is the 111th game that Knarr has been the head coach of the Monarchs. Mark Carr is entering his 21st season at the head of the Hawks football program. Carr became Hartwick's all-time winningest coach in 2015 with a win over Buffalo State. Since Carr began his tenure at Hartwick, he has developed multiple All-Americans, two ECAC Northwest Players of the Year as well as the 2002 and 2007 Melberger Award Winners, Dan Pincelli ('02) and Jason Boltus ('07). The Melberger Award is given to the Most Outstanding Player in NCAA Division III football.
Looking at Hartwick: The Hawks are coming off a strong performance to start the season as they earned their season-opening win over Maritime College, 31-10. The Hawks limited Maritime's rush offense to just 53 rushing yards while tacking on 296 yards of total offense. With the win, Jeremy Gerdvil was named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week as he led the defensive effort with 11 tackles, including six solo. He also posted 3.5 tackles for a loss of 21 yards with two sacks, with one resulting in a forced turnover on downs. Carlvin McDonald led the offense with 173 rushing yards out of the team's 197 yards in the game for an average of 6.0 yards per carry.
First Threads: The Monarchs will step out of the field house at Wright Stadium in their white jerseys and white pants with gold helmets for their first uniform combination of the 2022 season.
Single Digit Tough: The Monarchs award single digits based on merit, leadership and are retained throughout their time at King's. King's returned two single digit members from the 2021 season and added two more this past spring. The Monarchs now have four Single Digit Tough players:
Mike Karycinski (0),
Joseph Carchio (1),
Brendan Mozeleski (3), and
Brandon Cohen (9).
Captains this Weekend: The Single Digit Tough members of the Monarchs football program will serve as the captains in their season opener. Senior
Brandon Cohen will represent the offense, while seniors
Mike Karycinski,
Joseph Carchio, and
Brendan Mozeleski will represent the defense at the coin flip on Saturday.
A Look at the Monarchs:Â
- King's returns a core of leaders and role players on both sides of the football in 2022. For the offense, the Monarchs return All-MAC Second Team honoree in Brandon Cohen as he ranked as one of the top tight ends in the MAC, posting 28 catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 21.30 yards per game. The defensive unit returns All-MAC First Team selection in Brendan Mozeleski as he ranked fifth in the conference with 83 total tackles for an average of 8.3 per contest. His 1.20 tackles for loss also rnaked ninth in the MAC last season.
- The Monarchs return 28 seniors on their roster, including seven who have returned for their fifth year of collegiate eligibility. Seventeen of those 28 are listed on this week's two-deep, including 13 projected as starters.
- King's comes into this year's season with a total of 11 coaches on staff, and of that group three are King's graduates (Ben Bakanas, Joe Damiano, Tommy Gilmore).Â
- King's was picked to finish eighth in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll among the 11 conference schools.
- The Monarchs look to pick up their first road win and snap an eight-game road loss streak as their last road win was back on September 21, 2019 at Hartwick.
Up Next: King's will open their home schedule net Saturday, September 17 as they host Delaware Valley University in their MAC opener. The contest will also serve as King's Homecoming 2022 weekend at McCarthy Stadium with kick-off set for 1:00 p.m.m in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
