DOYLESTOWN, PA (September 7, 2022) – The King's College women's volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss despite a valiant effort in their MAC Freedom opener. The Monarchs fell 3-2 to the Delaware Valley University Aggies, in a matchup that featured a series of close sets.
The Monarchs got out of the gate early with an 8-3 run in the first set before the Aggies tied it up. After the teams went back and forth midway through the set the Monarchs found themselves down 20-18. However they stormed back to score seven unanswered points. Theresa Lynch capped off this run with a kill which gave the team a 25-20 win.
The Aggies took the second set 25-16 but the Monarchs responded with a victory of their own by that same score in the third set, which saw them go on a 12-3 run down the final stretch.
In the fourth set the Monarchs dug themselves into an 18-12 hole. Just as it looked like we were headed for the deciding fifth set the Monarchs clawed back on a 9-2 run thanks to a pair of service aces by Morgan Bryant and kills by Joy Kindall, Bella Salvia and Kathy Shepherd who finished the night with a team-high 11 kills. The late comeback fell short forcing a deciding fifth set.
The teams went neck-and-neck in the final set. But in the end the Aggies prevailed thanks to a final kill by Olivia Deffendall which capped off her big night with 21 kills. Caitlin Nemil led the Aggies with 45 assists on the night. For the Monarchs, Bryant had five aces while Keely Hoban led the team with 27 assists.
The Monarchs will hit the road again for a tri-match on Saturday where they will face Penn State Abington and Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA starting at 1 p.m.
