WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 10, 2023) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team trailed 2-0 after the first period but tallied the final four goals of the contest to down visiting Buffalo State 4-2 Tuesday night at The Revolution Ice Centre. With the win, King's improves to 3-8-1 on the season, while Buffalo State falls to 9-7-0.
Â
The first period began with Buffalo State (9-7-0) tallying the first shot of the game just 12 seconds in, but senior goaltender
Tyler Sayger, turned away the early effort. King's (3-8-1) responded just under two minutes later with their first shot coming from graduate student
Zach Satalino, but his effort was stopped by Reilly Moyer. The teams battled for most of the period before the Bengals opened the scoring at 17:24 on a goal from Joel Frazee before doubling their lead with just eight seconds left in the period on a goal from Nikita Kozyrev to take a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Â
The Monarchs came out flying in the second period, taking just over a minute to cut the deficit in half, as sophomore
Erik Borschevsky found the back of the net on a seeing eye shot, to put King's on the board at 1:07. King's continued to press, looking for an equalizer, and found it midway through the period, as sophomore
Casey Gerstein knotted the contest up at two, finishing off a pass from fellow sophomore
Tyler Blanchard at 11:50. The Monarchs jumped in front for the first time as sophomore
Brendan Krawczyk tallied his first career goal at 15:27 to put King's up 3-2, a lead that they took into the second intermission.
Â
The third period began as both teams traded chances, but as the game wore on, Buffalo State looked for an equalizer. Sayger however, was ready for everything that the Bengals threw his way as the clock wound down. With Buffalo State's net empty, Blanchard poked the puck lose in the neutral zone, before Gerstein iced the game, firing it into the open net with 58 seconds remaining, to give the Monarchs the 4-2 win.
Â
Sayger continued his run-in net, picking up the win, making 29 saves on 31 shots. Gerstein and Blanchard paced the offense, as both tallied two points, with Gerstein scoring two goals, and Blanchard adding two assists. King's won 28 of 38 face-offs, led by Blanchard who won 14 of 27 and Krawczyk who won seven of 16. The Monarchs killed off the only penalty they took, while going 0-1 on the power play.
Â
Moyer got the start in net, making 27 saves on 30 shots. Offensively, the Bengals had six players tally one point, led by Frazee and Kozyrev, who both recorded a goal. Buffalo State went 0-1 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill and won 38 of 28 draws.
Â
King's finishes off their five-game home stand on Friday afternoon, as the Monarchs host SUNY Cortland at 4 p.m. at The Revolution Ice Centre.
