Lee and Frenkel Score as Men's Hockey Falls 4-2 to Cortland

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 13, 2023) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team fought hard against visiting SUNY Cortland on Friday afternoon, falling to the Red Dragons 4-2 at The Revolution Ice Centre. King's falls to 3-9-1 on the year, while Cortland improves to 10-6-1.
 
King's (3-9-1) jumped out of the gates quickly, firing off the first three shots of the game, before Cortland (10-6-1) responded with their first shot of the game at 5:16. The Monarchs opened the scoring at 13:13 as sophomore Kent Lee found the back of the net at 13:13 to put King's up 1-0. The Red Dragons knotted up the game just 30 seconds later, as Trevor Veneklase beat senior goaltender Tyler Sayger to tie the score at one, at 13:41.
 
The second period started much like the first, as both teams traded chances. King's jumped back in front, as sophomore Aaron Frenkel finished off a passing play by first-year Seth Wyatt-Manning and sophomore Luke Babilon at 10:15. Cortland responded once again tying the score at two, on a goal from Geordan Buffoline at 14:55, sending the teams to the third period knotted at two. Cortland scored twice in the third period, to take the 4-2 win.
 
Sayger was strong in net, turning away 43 of 47 shots. Offensively, six players tallied a point, led by Frenkel and Lee who both tallied a goal. King's won 30 of 77 face-offs led by sophomore Brendan Krawczyk, who won 13 of 29 draws. King's went 0-1 on the power play, but went 3-3 on the penalty kill.
 
Ronan Mobley got the start in goal for Cortland, making 27 saves on 29 shots. Veneklase paced the offense, tallying three points, two goals and one assist. The Red Dragons went 0-3 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill, winning 47 of 77 face-offs.
 
King's heads out on the road for the first time tomorrow, as the Monarchs travel to New Haven, CT to take on Albertus Magnus at 7 p.m.
