HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (OCTOBER 28, 2023) -- The King's College women's volleyball team had an electric fourth set rally in loss against the Cyclones of Centenary (10-7) on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs are now 14-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
King's had a great 13-4 start in the first set of the afternoon that included multiple tallies by
Devan Moses (So.),
Morgan Williams (So.),
Kathy Shepherd (So.), and
Adriana Conforti (Jr.). Centenary answered back with their own 4-1 push. The Monarchs maintained their composure and continued pace throughout the rest of the set. King's eventually won 25-14.
In the second set the Cyclones came back with vengeance with a 14-4 run. The Monarchs retaliated back with a 10-1 jolt to get within one after a kill by
Mia Campanile (So.), making it 15-14. The two opponents would go back-and-forth for the remainder of the set. Centenary bested the Monarchs 25-19.
The third set was unlike the previous sets as there were eight ties and five lead changes. It was neck-and-neck throughout the match up as both teams traded points, not allowing either one to gain momentum. The score was 10-10 when the Cyclones made an 8-3 push.
Joy Kindall (So.) tried to make a lasting effort for King's with two straight kills to make it 19-17. Centenary took the third set 25-19.
The fourth and final set of the afternoon was a nail biter. The Cyclones controlled much of the match, but the Monarchs were not going down without a fight. The score was 11-8 when King's collected three straight kills by Shepherd and
Emma Monson (Jr.) to tie the set. The Monarchs would trail soon after, but the squad came back to life and made a 9-4 streak to take the lead 24-20.with the help of multiple kills by Campanile,
Lindsay Arezina (Fy.),
Emma Bolich (Fy.), Kindall, and Bolich. Centenary eventually remained victorious with a score of 26-24.
King's ended the afternoon with 37 kills, 35 assists, 68 digs, and a hitting percentage of .103.
Keely Hoban (Jr.) paced the Monarchs with 16 assists and 15 digs. Kindall and Shepherd both had a team high of eight kills. Conforti followed with her own 13 assists and Williams fueled the defensive end with 15 digs.
The Cyclones' Poppy Skjonnemand sparked the team with 21 kills and 15 digs. Vanessa Pagano dished out 24 assists. Defensively, Jenny Thistlethwaite and Asia Logan evened with 13 digs each.
King's will be back in McGrane Gymnasium for their final home Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest against FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1
st. The crew will end their regular season on the road for a tri-match against Ursinus and Gwynedd on Saturday, November 4
th starting at 12 p.m.
