SCRANTON, PA (March 1, 2023) -- In a competitive non-conference match up to start their March slate, the King's College baseball team fell on the road, 12-6, at the University of Scranton on Wednesday night. With the loss at Volpe Field, the Monarchs drop to 1-1, while the Royals improve to 2-1.
Â
The Royals got the scoring started as they went up 3-0 after the first two innings of play. The Monarchs' bats came alive in the third as a leadoff walk from
Chase Yochem saw the junior advance to second on a throwing error and to third during
Zach Day's at bat before an RBI double to right center from
Brandon Loner drove in the first run of the day for King's (1-1) and put the Monarchs within 3-1.
Â
Scranton (2-1) would plate another in the fourth, but the Monarchs responded again with three runs on three hits in the top fifth. Yochem led off with a double to left center before advancing to third on a single through the right side from Day. After a walk from Loner,
Justin Richards singled to left center to drive in one before a fielder's choice from
Michael Marmolejos drove in another. An RBI walk from
Jacob Sutton capped off the fifth-inning offense as King's tied the game, 4-4.
Â
The hosts would have an answer in the bottom of the inning, tallying six runs on four hits to take a 10-4 advantage. King's chipped away at the deficit in the sixth as back-to-back walks from Loner and Richards and a hit by pitch from Marmolejos loaded the bases to set up a two-RBI single to right center from
Gregory Ahlstrom with King's trailing, 10-6.
Â
The Monarchs' first road game slowed in the next two innings before Scranton posted two more runs off two hits in the bottom of the eighth as their lead swelled to 12-6. King's started the final inning strong as Ahlstrom hit a leadoff single and stole second, but the Monarchs would not be able to capitalize on the strong start as they fell, 12-6, on the road at Scranton on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Yochem went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, and two walks, while Day posted a 2-for-5 effort with a double and a run. Ahlstrom drove in a team-high two RBIs as he went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, and Loner and Richards recorded the remaining hits for King's in the loss with Loner scoring twice.
