Venis, Burke, and Lindsay Lead Women's Lacrosse to Conference Opening Win

DOYLESTOWN, PA (March 29, 2023) --- The King's College women's lacrosse team opened up MAC Freedom play, defeating host Delaware Valley 17-10 on Wednesday afternoon in Doylestown, PA. With the win King's improves to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Delaware Valley falls to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in MAC play.
 
Delaware Valley (2-6, 0-1) opened the scoring early, as the Aggies took a 1-0 lead at 14:39. King's (2-7, 1-0) wasted no time in responding as junior Olivia Benner tied the game just 25 seconds later. The Monarchs took their first lead of the contest a minute later, as sophomore Chloe Burke found the back of the cage, giving King's a 2-1 lead at 13:27. Delaware Valley answered, tying the game at two at 8:30, before a 3-0 run from the Monarchs, featuring goals from Burke, and sophomores Grace Venis and Kyleigh Dunworth to take a 5-2 lead with 3:43 to play. The Aggies countered with a 3-0 run of their own, as the game was tied at five after the first quarter. King's was strong in the second quarter, outscoring Delaware Valley 4-1 in the frame, as both Dunworth and Venis recorded two goals, as the Monarchs took a 9-6 advantage into the half.
 
The third quarter was all King's as the Monarchs outscored the Aggies 5-0, to take a 14-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the third quarter, sophomore Alli Lindsay notched a hat trick, while Venis and first-year Emilee Schultz each tallied on goal. The fourth quarter was even, as both teams scored three goals, Burke completed her hat trick early in the frame, before Venis tallied two more goals, as King's came away with the 17-10 win.
 
Senior Jessie Smalley started the contest in the cage, making four saves in the first half, while junior Sidney Bush recorded one save in the second half. Venis led the Monarchs attack recording six points on six goals, while Lindsay and Burke both notched five points on three goals and two assists, with Dunworth adding a hat trick. King's collected 16 of 30 draws, as Burke corralled five draws and Lindsay picked up four controls. The Monarchs forced 16 Aggie turnovers, as senior Brynn Pike caused six.
 
Caroline Berg got the start in goal and finished with six saves. Susan Rawding paced Delaware Valley, notching six points on five goals and one assist. The Aggies controlled 14 draws, while forcing the Monarchs into 15 turnovers.
 
King's returns home to take on Misericordia University in a MAC Freedom contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.
